Chapter 6
Another month passed with no new lead on Jason’s disappearance. Lyric was getting more and more restless with each passing day. She kept reminding herself that God was in control which gave her somewhat of a peaceful feeling. Lyric soon got back into life. She returned to school which turned out to be a major transition. It was hard the first couple of weeks. Everything reminded her of Jason. The lockers, the cafeteria, even the
water fountain. She carried her Bible everywhere with her. When she started to have her horrid visions of Jason she would flip to her favorite passages. One day as she was reading and praying she had an idea.
“Dad” she said walking into Drew’s office.
Drew looked up at Lyric in response.
“I want to help look for Jason.”
“Lyric…”
“No Dad” she interrupted “Just wait. I was thinking and I know Jason better than anyone. I know all his favorite places and all his secrets. I could help find him! I could lead the police and detectives to the clues they need. Please Dad!” Lyric’s eyes were shimmering with tears as she awaited her dads answer.
Drew sighed. He wanted to do what was right for Lyric and for the family. Could this possibly harm Lyric? He didn’t want to think of losing her as he had lost Tabitha. But he also thought that this was a good idea. Could Lyric possibly have enough information about Jason to help find him? He finally answered “Give me half an hour to pray about it and I promise I will give you your answer.”
“Deal” Lyric said feeling a little excited. She may have the chance to help look for Jason. That was something that she had been waiting for the last month.
As soon as Lyric left the room Drew started praying. He decided to call Ella in to pray with him. The two prayed for exactly thirty minutes and sure enough God reveled the answer. As if on cue Lyric walked in. She looked at her Dad and Ella with questioning eyes.
“We will call Mr. and Mrs. Liddell and talk it over with them.”
“Yes! Thank you so much!”Lyric said wrapping her arms around the two of them.
Drew laughed. He hadn’t seen his daughter this happy in awhile. He didn’t blame her; the chance to be right there helping look for Jason was encouraging he knew it gave her hope. He just hoped that she wouldn’t get her hopes up too much in case they didn’t find him. He pushed that thought to the back of his head. He needed stay hopeful for Lyric’s sake.
Lyric walked out of the office feeling inspired. She thanked God for this chance and prayed that he would give her the knowledge that was needed in order to find Jason.
The next day they called the Liddells. After talking it over they agreed it would be a good idea for Lyric to help. They arranged for Joshua to drop her at their house the next day. When they pulled up to the house Lyric took a deep breath. The sight of the big white house was a lot for Lyric, all her memories of Jason came back. Sliding down the stairs on pillows, sharing meals in the big yellow kitchen, and swinging from the big oak tree on the tire swing. Sensing Lyrics tension Joshua reached over and patted her shoulder.
“It’s okay Lyric. Do you want me to walk with you?”
Lyric looked over at Joshua and replied “No, I will be okay I have God remember?”
Joshua smiled at his sister “Okay! Go find him!” he said with a hint of laughter.
Lyric laughed and hopped out of the car. She ran up the cobblestone walkway. Made her way to the big red door and knocked.
“Hello Lyric.” Kassie Liddell said opening up the door. She couldn’t express how grateful she was when Lyric called. Her and her husband, Jake were beginning to lose hope. The police and detectives could only do so much as they were also working on other cases. She tried to be reasonable but there was only so much she could hold back, Jason was their miracle baby. They tried for 8 years to have a child they were told it wasn’t possible, yet just as they were giving up hope God provided a miracle and Kassie became pregnant. Jason meant the world to them and more.
“How are you dear?” Kassie asked leading Lyric into the sitting room.
“I’m fine.” Lyric replied looking around the room.
Kassie knew what Lyric was thinking. The house seemed empty without Jason there. It was quite, and boring without him there to jump out and surprise her or to wrap his strong arms around her as she’s trying to cook.
“The head detective should be here any minute to ask questions. While we are waiting would you like some cookies?”
Lyric smiled at Kassie. She was always sweet and loving. Though she seemed fairly at peace Lyric noticed the physical difference. She had lost weight; her sweet green eyes lost their spark and her smile though still a smile seemed somewhat forced.
“I will hold off on the cookie, thank you though.” The two ladies, who talked a little while more were soon joined by Jake. He greeted his wife and Lyric and sat down on his big leather chair. Lyric looked at Jake with a smile. Jason looked so much like him. He had Jake’s big frame, his honey brown hair and his charming smile. Her thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. Her heart jumped and her palms began sweating. What if she didn’t have the information he needed? What if she ends up being in the way instead of a help? Jake got up and answered the door. The two men walked in.
“Hello.” The man said directing his gaze to Lyric “My name is Samson Cain.” A name that fit Lyric thought. Samson was a big man. His height rising at about 6’7, He had dark black hair, bulging muscles, and narrow, piercing brown eyes.
Lyric stood up and offered Samson her hand “Lyric Wright” she said.
“Lyric.” Samson said as if trying her name out “Well then.” He finally said piercing the air with his booming voice. “Let’s get to work.”
They sat down at the big dining room table surrounded with Samson’s notes.
“We know he disappeared at 3:30 pm on January 1st. We know he was walking home from the grocery store. That is all so far. If you have any clues then we are open.” Samson announced looking at Lyric.
That is all they had gotten in a month? Lyric was surprised she had thought that they would have tons of little details and she would just have to state a few facts. But this was not the case; she tried to think of something that could help them. She felt useless, she couldn’t think of anything! She looked up at he three anxious adults and shook her head. She was embarrassed; she was supposed to be the one that knew. And she had failed already.
“Well, okay then.” Samson said looking through his papers some more.
Jake reached across the table and grabbed his wife’s hand. Lyric could tell they were disappointed. She thought harder, then it came to her.
“I know!” she announced standing up “Me and Jason had shortcut through the woods that only we knew about. I think he took that.”
“Well done darling!” Samson said standing up “Show us the way!”
