Author's note: Okay, for obvious reasons I am changing the surname. I'm using Google Translate for the Norwegian parts, so the translation may not be accurate. There is no shipping in this. I headcanon that The End took place in 2016. Also, this story may contain swearing, but don't say I didn't warn you!

Kari mumbled as she shifted in her chair. She hated family reunions, mostly because her Norwegian was a little rusty and she didn't understand what some signs meant.

Of course, they almost didn't go this year, due to the whole Red Army business that was happening in Norway. But no, Kari's grandfather clearly didn't care if they died from a bullet to the head.

Knowing her Grandpa Arthur, he would probably witness a nuclear bomb drop on the city and not bat an eye.

Kari did feel bad for the old man. The last time he spoke to his eldest child was 28 years ago, then it was discovered he was dead.

That had only happened four years ago.

None of the family were invited to the funeral.

Then, last year, Kari heard about a 'gas explosion' on Dirdum Lane that caused an entire house to blow up and the house on the left to be wrecked. It even killed one of the people living next door to the three men who used to live in the house-turned-crater.

Ever since then, the Red Army had been acting out more.

It didn't take a genius to figure out the two events were connected.

Maybe the explosion was the reason her mother agreed.

Kari sighed, and turned over a page in the book she was reading.

She was only reading the book, of course, to make her brothers and cousin ignore her.

Although, knowing them, Kenny and Kevin were probably frying ants in the garden while Sam tried to stop them.

Man, her family was weird.

She was snapped out of her thoughts by the arrival of her grandfather. The man had survived 4 years of war, and now, at 76, he was dragged into it again.

Somehow, he still managed to keep a calm demeanour.

"Whatcha reading there, sport?" He asked.

"Nothing much. Just a book I found that would stop the boys from talking to me. Of course, it's in Norwegian, so I can't read it, but they don't need to know that." Kari replied.

"Avoiding the little ones, are we? Can't blame you, sport. I did the same thing when I was your age."

Kari laughed a little at that. It was an open secret that she was her grandfather's favourite grandchild. He even gave her one of his father's old war guns.

He'd only ever given one of those to one other person.

Kari's late Uncle Albert.
