"Hey, Leah," he said with a grin on his face.
"H-hey, Jack," Leah sputtered in reply.
The teacher yelled for silence and class began. The class passed quickly, with Jack cracking jokes about the teacher whenever his back was turned, which made Leah laugh probably a little too loudly for her own good.
In her next class, Jack sat on the other side of the classroom, so Leah was back to thinking about the lamp. Her next two classes passed in a blur, and soon it was time for lunch.
After Leah got her tray, the table she usually sat at was full, so she sat by herself at an empty table in a corner of the cafeteria. The only people who noticed this were the "cool" girls: Ashley,Melissa, and Samantha. Jack noticed too, of course.
Ashley, Melissa, and Samantha left their trays at the "cool" table and walked over to where Leah was sitting. It was more like "sashaying," actually.
"Awww, is the loner sitting at the loner table?" Ashley asked her friends in a fake baby-talk voice.
"Yeah, or is she sitting with her imaginary friends?" Samantha asked back. Melissa stayed silent.
Leah was stunned. Why were they being so mean? Jack saw that she was being teased and came to her aid.
"Hey, just because the table she sits at is full, that doesn't make Leah a loner. In fact, she is sitting with someone. Me," Jack sat down next to Leah. Again, Leah couldn't find words to speak.
"Whatever," Ashley said, which basically meant that Jack had won the argument. She sashayed away, and Samantha and Melissa followed.
"Some people, right?" Jack turned to Leah. She was still too stunned to speak, but Jack started to talk so Leah didn't have to. Leah didn't know what he was saying, she was lost in Jack's crystal green eyes.
Suddenly a thought hit her like a punch in the face. She knew what she would wish for with her last wish.
