Chapter 9

So much for grabbing the money and bailing.

I groan to myself, quietly. I hadn't slept a wink last night, not fearing that my mate would storm into my cabin and claim me as most females fear but fearing what was to come tomorrow, er-- today.

"Goddess, you look terrible." Jones squatted beside my figure.

I laid in bed in the most awkward position with layers of bags under my eyes.

"I feel terrible." I muttered, slapping my hand to my face sliding it down in a slow motion.

"You ain't gonna make it far in the competition at this rate." He scrunched his nose at me.

Groaning, I bury my head deeper in my pillow. It seems I dug myself into a deeper grave.

What was I going to do at this rate?

What was he going to do to me?

A energetic knock sounded throughout the cabin and suddenly I am very worried that it might be my mate.

Would he order an arrest?

An execution?

Banishment?

As I wallow in fear and sadness, I hear rustling and then the door opening.

"Hello, is Ellion there?" A deep voice speaks.

My head arises quick when I realize it is Ben.

"Ben!" I exclaim.

Jumping out of the uncomfortable bed, I maneuver past Dexter who had opened the door. Jones shrugged at my sudden outburst and sat in his bed.

I rush over and nearly ram into him.

"Whoa there." He says, holding his hands up to brace the impact.

I stopped on time and my face is etched with panic. Glancing behind me, I see Dexter with his eyebrow raised, a slight twitch here and there. Although Jones sat on his bed, flipping through a magazine, I was very much aware he was eavesdropping.

Grabbing onto Ben, I drag him outside. "Don't mind us, I just want to talk with my friend!" I yell to Dex and Jones.

It was awfully bright and hot today, the sun was in too much of a happy mood, in my opinion.

I bring Ben to a secluded area, "Listen, Ben. I did something very bad."

I was on high alert, glancing everywhere making sure nobody would be in hearing radius of us.

"What did you do, Ells?" He asks, his eyebrows furrowed as he crossed his arms over his chest.

Sighing, I run my fingers through my short hair. "I tried to..." I didn't know how to say it. Well I didn't want to say it.

"Tried to what?"

"I--... I stole... From... er--..."

He gets fed up with me and gives an irritated look. "Hurry with it, Ells, I came to drag you to trial two. They had called all recruits bright and early but you were the only one missing."

I gulped, "Really? Uh..." I trail off. Perhaps it was not the best idea to bring up my bad news and my seemingly unavoidable fate.

"Spit. It. Out." Ben huffed, folding his arms. "And do it quick, they gave us a fifteen minute warm up time, and we've already used like five of it." He glanced to the looming clocktower in the distance.

I sighed, covering my face, not wanting to look at the disappointment and possible fear on his face. "I got caught trying to steal from the alpha." I mutter quietly.

"What!" He exclaimed loudly.

I jump at the noise and immidietly cover his mouth with my hand. "Shh!" I tell him, an anxious look on my face. I glanced around, hoping no one heard.

Unfortunately, it seemed fate was in a sinister mood today. I see a a large hulking figure staring in our direction, he seemed it be getting closer and closer at a fast rate. The closer he got, the more apparent the glower on his face became. His lips rose to reveal his shiny sharp teeth, his snarl sent a terrified shiver up my spine.

Vohn approached menacingly, his eyes lit with a flame. But not one of lust, one of pure anger.

Ben didn't seem to notice the approaching fury, but I sure as hell did. Ben snatched my hand away from his mouth, holding my wrist in a firm but gentle grip.

"Els, what the hell?" He hissed, worry arising in his eyes.

I did not respond to him. My eyes glued to my mate and his freezing gaze. It was as if he dared me to move. I pursed my lips in simple terror as to what he might do.

I feel Ben"s confused gaze on me. He tugged on my arm as if to pull me back to the conversation. "El? Hello?"

I refused to move even my eyes. Vohn might be angry now. But he might be even more if shift my eyes.

Ben releases an exasperated sigh. "El what's wrong with you?" He waved his other hand in front or my face. He shakes his head, "well we have to get going now, c'mon, we'll talk more later."

I wished he dragged me off sooner. But it was too late, Vohn is here. And his eyes move from mine to Ben's hands around my wrist then back to my eyes.

Man, he is pissed.
