New kids were rare. They were like one of those expensive snacks we indulge ourselves in only once a year. Anymore and we might as well already claim bankruptcy. New kids were Unheard of, Two new kids were unbelievable, but new kids in the middle of school year was worth a place in the local newspaper. So where does that leave us when a new kid joins in the middle of the year, roaring into school on a killer white bike and is the dictionary definition of gorgeous. That case scenario was a thing of legends.

Students lounging on the schools lawn stared curiously at the bike as it zipped down the road and stopped in front of Grayson high. There was a silence as the engine cut off and the rider stared unnervingly at the great hulking beast of a school. He continued straddling the white beauty just gazing through the tinted visor at nothing in particular before swinging a long toned body over the white bike. He hitched his black backpack higher on a shoulder before he reached up and unclipped the black helmet.

I could literally feel the schools population hold their breaths as he began sliding the helmet off. I worried that when they finally sucked in a breath the pressure in their lungs would have built up to such an intense level that their resulting inhale would cause the entire world to be uprooted and drained down their mouths. No such thing happened. But a few lives might have been changed when the helmet was off. Even I had to take sharp intake of the cold air at what lay under the mask. Holy shit.

His hair feathered as the helmet was dragged over it before the black strands fell messily into place. And when he couldn't hide behind the visor anymore, I swear the entire female population just fainted. Well okay, that was a slight exaggeration, but one girl did sigh dreamily and slump against a none too happy boyfriend.

But what did the boy expect, Mysterious Rider Boy was beautiful. His skin was tanned, with a slightly crooked nose. His lips were a very reddish pink, with the bottom slightly more Fuller than the top. His hair was wild and untamed falling onto his eyes. You'd have to be blind and dumb not to appreci-

Suddenly, I was no longer so bored with this new kid. Sure, while they were rare, it's not like the new guy was going to pull out a gun and yell "freeze bitches."

But, I sat up straighter and trained my gaze on his eyes with renewed curiosity. I squinted, taking in his face, but he had already angled his body away from mine and was sauntering down the lawn with a lazy gait. I cursed, pushing myself up from my perch at the roots of the tree I casually walked closer to the entrance and stopped when he reached the double doors.

Surprisingly he stopped too. Then as if having an internal debate, he turned and regarded us with the blankests stare he could muster. He surveyed us with his charcoal eyes, eyes so black they appeared to be a rival of the colour it self.

And almost by chance, his eyes connected with mine. And in that second that we shared, something snapped inside of me. It was like drinking warm honey, the warmth spread over my heart and seeped into my stomach. It was the feeling of knowing something, of Coimg to the realization of something life changing. It was that pride in figuring the word that lingered on the top of you're tongue that just kept slipping away the more you wondered what it was. Like that metaphorical lightbulb in your head finally understood a equation. In this case it burned so brightly with the realisation, that I felt that little light in my head shatter.

But he was oblivious to my internal dilemma because a sixth of a second later he continued assessing the kids of Greyson high. Clearly he didn't come to the same realization I did, which really, really stung. The fact that the feelings weren't mutual were only highlighted with shocking cruelty when he lifted his middle finger to his lips, kissed it and gave us a icy cold salute with it. Smirking at what he accomplished, he swivelled around and entered the school with a flourish, sending the doors ricocheting against the wall. And he was gone... Just like that.

The fire of knowledge still burnt deep in my gut, spreading like a wildfire. It wasn't love at first sight, I was too unfeminine to fall for a guy just for his looks. It wasn't love or adoration, I didn't even like him. The flames that engulfed my heart were those of understanding. Of comradeship.

All because he had my eyes...

Eyes with the same emotions hidden behind the same reinforced metal wall...

The same eyes with the burden of knowing the world was not the same as we perceived it from the hazy mindset of a seven year old...

He had my eyes...

It was glorious, it was tragically beautiful and it was defying all odds.

He had my eyes.

And right then, just as the schools.doors ceased rocking on it's hinges, I came to the second gratifying realisation of the day. Even if Mysterious Rider Boy had no idea of it, I had just gained a best friend.

You, My friend, are my favourite person in the world.
