Seven got past Chemistry and English. He headed nervously to the Math room thinking about writing 1000 lines of: I will do my homework. I will do my homework. Over and over in his best handwriting.
When he entered the room he was greeted like he always was; a cold hard stare from Ms. Harrison. But that day the routine was different. She wheeled in the old really thick television we usually use for movies. Instead of placing a disk inside she just merely turned on the news and waited staring at the class. Not long after in between a commercial the picture of the president flashed on and started talking. Seven realized this only happens in end-of-the-world movies. Everyone in the class seemed to be 100% focused on the screen. He spoke: "Hello my fellow Americans," he had worry in his voice "Today I have very bad news. Today the Hubble telescope has took a picture of a large meteor heading to Earth. It's expected arrival is in 1 year. Everyone in the White House is preparing flying vehicles to stay in space for about 10 years. We can make only 4 of them that can fit about 1,000,000 people. Tonight at 6:00 if you are selected by random draw you will get a phone call I advise you to start packing." The speaking stopped and the news reporters all were freaking out. For the first time in the three years Seven had been at the school, Ms. Harrison had shone some emotion. "Class dismissed." Is all she managed to stammer.
The class exited from the room with mixed emotions; none excited nor happy. Seven was petrified. All his dreams in life were probably dead. He had a one to who knows shot of getting on the ship. Seven pushed his way through the crowd to the front doors were he found Molly crying on the steps. He considered what he should do. He choose to plop himself down next to her and asked if she was okay. "Just, well you know," she sniffled, "the world is gonna end and I'm gonna have a one in a ga-zillion chance of getting on." She replied.
"Well if it makes you feel any better you can do all the things you've wanted to do for a year."
She laughed, "I guess you're right. Anyway we have a year. I'm gonna head home now and pointlessly stare at the phone." She stood up and walked away. This is the best day in the last days if the world, Seven thought. He stood up and jogged to his house. To stare pointlessly at the phone.
