Windsville, New Mexico.Livvy's Pov.
Most people believe that friendships begin with a smile. Well, in Cass' and my case, our life long friendship began with a cuss. Funny right?. Well on the morning of my fifth birthday, I was in school not quite voluntarily I might add.
Scared and lonely but hiding all of that under my usual tough facade. So this new girl comes to school that morning, and when everyone is wishing me a happy birthday-many more years and all that crap people spout on birthdays-she begins to tell everyone about how she spent her last birthday in Paris with her ma and pa and her elder brother, and how they had dinner at their chateau and a lot of stupid things that had me a teeny bit jealous of her family's wealth since my parents were pretty much middle working class peeps.
Mid way into her story, she perks up and asks in a tiny, annoying voice, "have you ever left Windsville, Libby?".
The entire class' attention is focused on me in that moment and I'm hot with anger, hurt and embarrassment, so I say, "Leaving Windsville does not make one sensible it seems and I'm Livvy not Libby bitch!".
It did not register in my little head what I'd said until I hear the gasps that fill the small classroom, and I don't think my ears have ever been as hot as they were that afternoon. The new girl's face contorts in what looks like hurt and her big, brown eyes dilate with tears just before they fall down her pretty face and her lips wobble.
Later that afternoon, my parents come to pick me up after being called by my teacher.
"She cussed at a fellow, well meaning child", Miss Roselyn told my ma, while pa waited in the car for us.
"Oh I'm sorry, I'm sure she meant no harm and we'll talk about it later at home today Rose", Mom replied in a soothing voice which would later be sickly sweet to me while she gives me an earful later on about my behavior to someone I should've made my friend. As we leave for the car, the new girl peeks out the classroom door and waves at me with a smile on her face.
While some people would interpret this as satisfaction that she'd gotten rid of the only obstacle to her having the undivided attention of everyone in the class, which at that time I'm pretty sure the smile meant so, I interpreted it as forgiveness.
The next morning, I gave my first ever apology and made my first ever friend-Cassandra-and till today, we've been inseparable and she might be petty, vain and as snobby sounding as she was that first day thirteen years ago, but she's probably the best human I know in the whole world.
After Damien, her hot, hot, hot brother that is...
