Chapter 4
"What a pretty little girl you are," a rough, familiar voice says as he reaches towards me.
"hat are you doing here? You can't be here?" I tremble away from the man. He's wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans. I know this man. He haunts my dreams-well nightmares.
"You think you can escape me? I am always here waiting for that perfect moment to snatch you up," he laughs deeply as he slowly creeps towards me.
"You will never get near me." I powerlessly state as I turn away from the man that is standing in front of me. I'm falling. I try to catch myself, but I keep falling and falling yet I never hit the ground. I'm falling into a black hole. A black that is indescribable.
*Alarm screaming*
Jarring awake, sweaty and shaking a little, however enough to be noticeable. Rolling over I turn my alarm clock off. As I sit up from my bed, I'm startled as I see my brother Easton standing in my doorway.
"Hey sis, you good? You seem a bit frightened." Easton states as he enters my room and sits on the edge of the bed beside me, "did you have another nightmare about him again?"
"Yeah, but I'm okay." I answer moving to the edge of the bed, so I am sitting beside him. "I just don't understand why it is not getting easier. It should be getting easier, Easton. It's been ten years since the incident."
"I'm so sorry Pay, I should have protected you." Easton pulls me into a hug and kisses the top of my head. "Maybe you should take a day off from school?"
"No."
"Okay then, put a pretty smile on your face and get ready," Easton smiles and gets up stretching his arms. Smiling back at him, he nods and walks out of my room closing the door behind him, leaving me with my thoughts.
>February 2nd 2008<
"Mommy... Daddy... where are you?" a little girl that looks no older than seven shouts out. Walking through the house, the little girl with her high pigtails and pink dress twirls around the house searching for her mom and dad. The girl seems happy, like she has never had a bad day in her life. As the girl enters what seems like the hundredth bedroom, she stumbles upon a man wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans. The man is startled at the site of the girl. He had the perfect plan. That plan did not include someone being home to catch him in the act. This girl could be trouble for him. He has to do something.
"Who are you? You are not my mom or my dad," the little girl mumbles backing out of the room.
"Well aren't you a pretty little girl," the man sneers as he inches towards the girl. "You would be the perfect fit in my dollhouse. Do you like dollhouses?"
The little girl shakes her head and starts running towards the staircase. The man grabs her and puts his hand over her mouth.
"They will pay me more for you than anything I can get out of this house."
>Present time<
I decided that it was time to get out of bed and put the horrible nightmare out of mind like I've done thousands times before. Getting up, I head to my closet and start picking clothes for the day. Deciding to go with a different style today, I pick out a grey crop top with black skinny jeans with rips at the knee. I pair the outfit with a dark, forest green jacket and black combat books. Looking at myself in the mirror I notice that my hair is a birds nest, so I head to my bathroom and plug my straightener in. After I finish my hair, I head downstairs and grab a banana to take to school for breakfast. Looking at the calendar on the fridge I see that today is Wednesday. Crap. I have to stay after with Isaac today.
"Hey mom, I'm staying after school today, but I'll be home around four, okay?"
"Yeah honey, that's fine. But why are you staying after? You don't have practice on Wednesday"
" have to stay after to tutor Isaac. He's having problems in math."
After finishing the conversation with my mom, I hug her bye and head out the door leaving for school. When I arrive to school, I climb out of my car and grab all the books in my backseat that I somehow ended up with from the library. I wobble my way to Easton's truck carrying the books and my bookbag. When I make it to my brother, I drop my bag and smile up at him."Hey bro. Do you mind carrying that to my class and leaving it with Char, I have to carry these books to the library."
Eastons sighs as he grabs my bag, "do you need me to carry those books for you too, or are you okay?" Giving me a worried look, he opens his mouth to say something else but we are interrupted by Isaac shouting my brothers name and walking towards us.
"Easton! My man, what are we doing after school today?" Isaac starts saying to my brother completely ignoring that I'm standing right beside him.
"Excuse me Isaac but you have other obligations to do after school." Whining I turn to Easton and give him my best pouty face. "Please make him show up to tutoring. If he doesn't I'm going to fail math and we both know that I cannot risk that."
"Sorry Isaac, but we can't have my sister failing classes." Easton pats him on the back and smiles at me, "let's go drop the books off at the library, then I'll walk you to your class okay?" Grabbing my books and backpack, he starts walking towards the library.
"Thank you, Easton." I smile at my brother as I start to follow him, I turn and look at Isaac. "Oh and Isaac I'll seen you in the library at 3:30, don't be late."
When Easton and I are done at the library, we begin walking to my first class of the day which is math. As we turn down the hallway of my class, I realize that everyone is staring at me and Easton. I look towards Easton to see if he has any idea why they are acting different than usual. Stopping in the middle of the hall, I'm scared of all the anger that is written on Easton's face.
"What the hell, what is wrong with all of you." Eastons fumes out looking towards everyone in the hallway. When Easton finds two guys from the baseball team, he grabs one by the collar pushing him up against a locker, knocking the air out of the poor boy. "Why is everyone looking and laughing at my sister? Tell me or you won't live to see the next day." Easton threatens.
"I dont- I dont know," the boy against the locker breathes out.
"Not a good enough answer. I saw you looking at your phone then look at Payson and laugh." Easton tightens his grip pushing the boy into the lockers more. "Tell me now!"
The boy struggles to breath but somehow manages to still speak "There is a picture going around of your sister." Easton loosens his grip on the boy so he can explain more about the picture. "The picture shows her in her crop top and surrounded by you and Isaac. Someone drew stuff all over her face. There was a caption to the photo that says she the biggest whore in the school."
When the boy finishes talking, I run towards the exist of the school before I can hear anything Easton has to say. I'm so embarrassed, why is this happening to me. God, what have I done to deserve this? When I finally make it out of school, I turn and run to a park that is close by. Seeing that the playground is empty mostly because school is starting and because it looks like its about to storm, I walk towards one of the tunnels and sit inside with my knees to my chest. As I close my eyes, I begin to hear the pitter patter of the rain starting to fall on the top of the tunnel. Well isn't this just swell. Listening to the rain come down, I start to pick up on a sound of someone running closer and closer to the tunnel that I am in. I stop my breathing in hopes that no one comes into the tunnel and discovers me. I see legs at the end of the tunnel and the man squats down and looks inside the tunnel.
"Payson?"
"Isaac."
