trapped - a short story

my hands are shaking.

my lungs feel suffocated.

i am trapped.

trapped in this asylum of beeping horns and black suits.

i thought this parking garage was connected to the mall, but i was mistaken.

instead, i am in the habitat of a business building, trapped under the glares of dim parking garage lights and the judgmental eyes of businesspeople.

how can i survive in a place like this?

my knees give out, and i fall to the ground.

hailey beckons me forward. "come on! it's this way!"

her voice is like a whisper in the back of my mind, but i'm able to gather the strength to stand to my feet. i can do this.

i can do this.

i will do this.

i rise on trembling legs. my fingers are numb from the pain and the panic.

hailey leads me forward, and then for the first time in what feels like forever, i feel the sunshine on my face.

i am free; free from the restraints of that parking garage.

i am free.
