Chapter I

I never had sleeping problems before, but today, I was having so much trouble falling asleep. I stayed there, lying in my bed for hours waiting for sleep to finally come.
My room was nothing out of the ordinary--a king-sized bed, a bookcase holding my textbooks, and my collection of fantasy novels; a dresser with a mirror on top of it, a big wardrobe, and a desk with my computer and my lamp. Nothing too fancy. The only uncommon thing was that my bed was placed against the window to gain space.
The temperature had fallen dramatically in only a few days, winter was coming faster than expected. It was raining heavily outside and the wind was howling determinedly. The whole room was plunged into darkness.
Suddenly, in the lack of luminosity, a thud resounded. I switched the light on to    check what was going on. It was a book.                                                     
The Bible--the biggest book in my bookcase-- had slipped out of its spot and had fallen down on the ground. After a quick look, everything seemed normal in the room. I could go back to bed. I switched the light off for the last time and went deep under the thick and comfortable blankets.
But just right before closing my eyes, something caught my attention. A face! It was a face! A young, smiling lady was staring at me, perched upon my desk chair. She was pale--so pale that she could still be discerned in the blind darkness of an unlit room.
I panicked and dove for my light switch.  But when the lamp finally lit up, she was gone. Nobody was around. Was it my imagination? I attempted to calm myself down with a few deep breaths. I got back in my bed, hoping I'd slip into a deep slumber, but I knew it was going to be a very long night...
