I got back to my room with mixed emotions on the conversation. I whittled with my keys for a moment, trying to find the right one, when I thought I heard a sound coming from inside. I didn't bother finding the key instead I kicked the door down as hard as I could, and held my gun attentive. I didn't say a word, but my eyes were searching like a hawk's for anything that could possibly have been misplaced. Then my eye found the open window. Whoever was in here must have not had time to cover their tracks. I quickly shuffled over to the window and looked out, there was no one in sight. Something crinkled under my hand.
"Where the dark melts into the light is where you shall find the night. Come to find us, and we shall make it right.
Sincerely,
Yours truly"
I quickly shoved the note into a pocket, willing that the security camera didn't catch any of it.
+++++
As I lay in bed, the note safely tucked into the lining of my combat boots, I couldn't keep my mind off of who it might have been from. I had already come to the conclusion that the note was definitely not from anyone outside of this base. The security would have been too tight to get by without being caught. So it must have been someone working within the base, but what could they have meant? Did they know about my brother? Or is it something different? My mind was filled with terrible thoughts and ideas, when I finally managed to drift to sleep.
I woke with a jolt. My body told me to lie back down to sleep, but my clock begged to differ.
"0900? Dmammit!" I said to myself, I was already a half hour late for morning lineup. I quickly changed into my uniform and grabbed my gun from it's case, and reported to the main office.
"I apologize for my late attendance at morning lineup. I have no excuse." I say standing at attention.
"You know what this means Sargent." I know exactly what it means, and I sigh internally.
"Bathroom duty, for the next two weeks. Thank you for your honesty." She gives me permission to leave, and I let my shoulders slump a little.
"Tough morning huh?" Says a scrawny looking kid standing outside the main office.
"Yeah." I say, too tired to say much more.
"You look dead, rough night too?" Talk about honesty. Who did this kid think he was?
"Look kid I need to report to my post, and I'm positive you have somewhere to be too." I say trying to brush him off.
"Yeah, actually that's the thing. I was sent to give you a message." At this, my ears perk up a bit. Could this have anything to do with last night?
"Continue sir." I say expectantly. He leans in as if to tell me something confidential.
"The men's bathroom in wing 400 has an overflowing toilet. You have orders to clean it up." Then he bursts out laughing. I sigh and roll my eyes. How much can you really expect from a rookie?
