Easton's assistant awaited me at the elevator, he wore a navy suit with a white shirt underneath it and a black tie to pull the outfit together. His chocolate brown hair was stylishly swept to the side and when I looked into his hazel eyes I saw nothing but coldness in them. I squared my shoulders, telling myself not to let this man get to me. I was here to see Easton and fuck what everyone else thought of me. I would never see them again anyway.
"If you would follow me, Miss Miller." He spoke monotonously, not awaiting my answer as he turned on his heels.
I followed after the tall man, he led me straight to Easton's office. He knocked on the door and stepped aside, gesturing for me to go ahead.
"Miss Miller is here to see you." He announced.
When I opened the door cautiously the assistant left my side, already on the move to proceed with his next task. I stepped inside the office, overwhelmed with what I saw. The room was spacious, decorated with glass, white metal, and grey. Very sterile looking. Easton sat behind a glass desk, his black leather chair creaking as he got comfortable in his seat. His deep blue eyes narrowed on me as I slowly approached his desk.
"You made quite a scene, Poppy." His voice was smooth and low, he spoke barely above a whisper yet I heard him loud and clear.
I gulped when I noticed how intensely he stared at me. The way his lips curled down I could tell he was disgusted with my behavior. I was never good enough in this man's eyes. He never hid that truth either. He made it very clear he thought I wasn't good enough. This man was an asshole and I didn't understand why Alex let this man control his life.
"You demanded to see me and here you are." He gestured around his office, "I assume you came to see me to childishly scold me for telling Alex not to waste his life away with you."
His words were harsh and cold, he didn't hold back his punches. I stood before him, feeling like I was frozen to the spot. His blue eyes narrowed on me.
"Well?" He asked, "Are you going to waste my time too, Poppy?"
"You're a jerk, you know that?" I asked him quietly, "I've never done anything to offend you yet you made me the enemy the first time we met. Alex and I were happy and you destroyed that. Just tell me why? You believe he is wasting his life away with me? How exactly?" I asked him, "I never demanded anything out of him, I just loved him." Tears rolled down my cheeks as my heart clenched tightly when I remembered our breakup, "That's just not good enough for you?"
Easton leaned back in his chair, viewing me with indifferent eyes, "It's not good enough for me." He confirmed, "He can do much better, marry someone who adds something to his life. That's it." He got to his feet, his height feeling a little intimidating to my small frame, "Love is meaningless, it's not helping him to move forward in life. All it does to him is holding him back. You don't fit in his life and by now you must have come to realize that. If you claim to love him then do him a favor and walk away without looking back."
I shook my head at him, completely stunned at how heartless this man was. Easton Dehn didn't care about anyone or anything. He cared about the numbers and achievements. He was barely human.
"You're a bastard," I whispered, turning on my heels and heading for the door.
"Once again you proved to be a waste of time, Poppy." His voice trailed after me, "Forget about Alex and move on."
Clenching my fists at the side I stormed to his desk without warning. It startled him, he didn't think I'd show backbone. His words were painful and he thought I'd walk away with my tail behind my legs. For a split second I could have sworn I saw amusement flash through his eyes. This son of a bitch really thought much of me. He barely treated me like a human being. Raising my hand I clenched my fist and punched him right in the face. He stumbled back, holding his nose as he checked for blood. It wasn't hard enough to draw blood but it did make his cool composure crack.
"Fuck you," I told him and then stormed out of his office, leaving the door wide open.
His assistant got to his feet and made his way to Easton's office. He was making a fuss while Easton hushed him. I ignored the noise in the background and took the elevator to the ground floor. Easton's words hurt, him telling me over and over again I wasn't good enough actually did make me believe I wasn't worth anything. It made me lose confidence, punching him in the face was what made me feel better. Resorting to violence wasn't the answer but it sure as hell felt good watching that cocky smile on that man's stupidly handsome face slip away. He'd know better now. I took a cab back to my little flower shop. It wasn't much, I knew it didn't impress the great Easton Dehn, but it was mine and I loved working at it. I grabbed the keys from my bag and unlocked it. Entering the shop decorated in pastel colors I closed the door behind me, making sure the sign said the shop was closed. I put my stuff on the counter and started to clean up, needing something to do to forget about my meeting with Easton fucking Dehn. Around eight PM I left the shop to grab something to eat. I felt worse than before, Easton's words haunting me. As I made my way to the Chinese restaurant a few blocks away from my little floral shop I noticed a van closing in on me. I didn't think much of it, I kept my eyes lowered to the ground watching my feet as I headed to the restaurant.
Worthless
A waste of time
The words kept echoing in my head, making tears sting my eyes. I glanced up when I suddenly heard muffled voices, throwing orders back and forth. When I turned around no one was there. It was just me. I looked ahead again, quickening my pace, nearly running because fear washed over me. I wanted to scream when I felt a hand grip my wrist but then a hand wrapped around my mouth and muffled my voice. I was pulled into the van, tears streaming down my face when I noticed I was surrounded by men whose faces were covered. I shook my head when a towel closed in on me. It was pressed against my nose and mouth, making me lose consciousness.
