"Family Vacation. What do you guys think?" my father asked as he came in through the door, just returning from a long day at work.
I always loved when he did this. He said it was a way for us to bond and have family time, away from our everyday lives and we were on holidays so there was no harm. Right?
As any ten year old child would, I squealed at it and so did my two younger brothers. Six year old Dylan and four year old Caleb squealed along with me.
It was usual for us to do things like this when we were younger but as the years went by after Caleb was born, they just became less frequent.
My mom, Adrienne smiled as well but the excitement that should have been in her eyes wasn't there. Not like it was all those years ago but as a child I decided to brush it off.
Two days later, we were on a flight to Hawaii. As we landed and were taken to a hotel.
The hotel was grand and majestic just like the brochure promised. As the eldest, I got to have my own room and my brothers got to share one while my parents got one to themselves.
I can say that I was the luckiest. My room had the best view of the beach that was located near the hotel and the sea was so beautiful. Like it was calling me.
I placed my hands gently on the window pane as I watched how the people were having fun.
They were mostly grownups having fun and playing in the white sand, some near the ocean. What are those two doing?
Are they kissing?!
Ewwwwwww...
I quickly closed my eyes and turned away from the window. As I did, my mommy came into my room. She stood there on the dark purple carpeted floor, smiling at me.
She walked further as she sat on my king sized bed covered with soft linen. She gestured for me to come to her so, I stalked toward her with a smile on my face, hoping that she hadn't just seen me staring at those people that were doing that.
When I got to her, she carried me in her arms and kissed my forehead.
"Enjoying the view?" she teased and I grin.
"Let's watch together shall we?" she asked.
"Okay, mommy." I said as she led me to the window once again.
"Someday, my price charming and I are going to come here and have a family vacation just like you and Daddy. The perfect couple." I said making a heart with my thumb and index fingers of my hands.
She gave me a sad smile and kissed my forehead again, pulling my hands apart.
"Sometimes, it just isn't what we thought it would be..." she said.
If only my ten year old self had known, that was a warning.
If only I had known, that was just the calm before the storm...
