Rose Hathaway. That’s my name and I am a Dhampir, which means that I spend my whole life guarding the Moroi. The Moroi is an ancient race of royal vampires. My best friend and my Moroi is Lissa. She is basically next in line for the throne and I am her guardian. Well, some may call me novice, but I consider myself her guardian. Ever since we ran away from St. Vladimir’s, I’ve been responsible for Lissa’s well-being and protection. Some asshole came and got us and took us back to the academy. Little did I know that asshole would become not only my mentor, but also the love of my life.
I walked in the gym with my black leggings and sports bra on, a bulky old gym bag, and my hair pulled back in a ponytail. I found my mentor, Dimitri standing in the middle of the mat with a silver stake in his hand. The moment I walked in, he threw it at me. It landed about three inches away from my head, stuck in the wall.
“Okay Comrade,” I shouted from across the room.
He stood a foot taller than me and had chocolate brown hair that brushed the top is his shoulders. He was like a god.
“Today,” he paused as he walked towards me and pulled the stake out of the wall. “We are killing Strigoi.”
Strigois are the baddest of the bad. They are undead little pricks that love the taste of Moroi blood. Get bitten by one of them, have fun being a Strigoi. The only thing that can kill them is a silver stake. Luckily, they only come out at night. As a guardian, every Strigoi kill earns you a nice mark on the back of your neck. Dimitri has loads of them; sometimes they’re visible when he has his hair up.
“You want to thrust the stake right to the chest. If done wrong, they are not truly dead.” He made quick jab to my chest, but I blocked his forearm and twisted him around behind my back. “If I were Strigoi, would you be able to kill me?”
I was busy deflecting Dimitri’s blow, “Uh…. Yeah.”
He grabbed my calf and was able to flip me over on the mat. I was now on my back. He stood overtop of me looking down, “You hesitated.”
The wind was knocked out of me and my chest felt completely flattened. “Only because would were trying to stab me and I was just a little distracted you ass!”
He chuckled a little as he folded his arms. “From now on,” he turned and grabbed his gym bag, “I will be doing sneak attacks on you. Remember, it doesn’t matter how close you were to that person they are not the same person you knew. They are now soul less Strigoi.” With that, he left the gym while I layed there propped up on my elbows. There was just something about him that made me crazy about him. I know that there is something there between us, but do I really want there to be? I don’t know, but what I do know is that I want to be in a hot shower right about now.
