Waking up to the smell waffles is like waking up in heaven. There aren't many better things in life. You can't realy stay in bed after smelling waffles. I was out of bed, dressed and downstairs before I had remembered that I was on a dangerous quest and was probably going to die.
When I arrived downstairs I saw that everyone was sat at the table eating toaster waffles and maple syrup. Then I noticed that there was a toddler in a high chair. I guessed that this must have been what Lewis had wanted to tell me the night before. I sat down next to Mary and she slid some waffles across to me.
After breakfast we left. It was so sad, I had a strange fealing that I would never see them again. I shook Richards hand and gave Mary a quick hug, I shook Lewis' hand and bent down to give Sarah a hug. Then we all climbed into the car and off we went.
I was in charge of the music so I plugged the MP3 player that Leo had given me and set it off. Some song by All Time Low began playing. Ebony muttered something that I just caught, It sounded like 'This song defines our relationship' Whatever that meant. After about 30 miles and 6 more songs we stopped for food and fuel.
The gas station reminded me of one where I had got beaten up once. At the age of twelve I had stood up for someone in an argument at a gas station like this in Rhode Island. What had followed was an epic beat down. During which I had been kicked so may times that I had ended up with three broken ribs, two cracked teeth and a bloody nose. My life sucked let's be honest.
While Ebony filled up the car me and Alice went to buy snacks. Inside it felt like a small convenience store. As I was trying to decide which flavour of Pringles to buy five men dressed in identical biker outfits came in. One of them pulled a gun from inside his jacket and pointed it at the clerk. Another pulled a Swiss army knife from his sleeve, extended a blade, and held it to Alice's throat. A third pulled a Rifle from somewhere and aimed it at me.
"Make a move and your dead" I recognised his accent. He was from somewhere in South Dakota. Time seemed to slow down. I put my hand to Dawnbringer and pulled it out. I swung it and it collided with the gun barrel. There was a dull thunk that seemed to spread through whole store and suddenly the men weren't men at all. They were skeletons whose skull's were wreathed in flame. There weapons were wreathed in the same fire. What the fuck. It appeared that the store was being held up by a gang of ghost riders.
I swore and dived behind a row of products. The creature who had been aiming at me fired. The miniature fireball ripped through the floor where I had been standing. I rolled between shelves and used that time to throw my sword at the creature holding Alice. It released an in-human scream and burst into flames. Alice back-flipped over a shelf, only slightly singed, and began to cower next to me. She had pulled out her bow and I had managed to draw out my gun.
While the leader continued to aim its gun at the clerk the remaining three monsters made an attempt to force me and Alice out of hiding. I nodded to her and we went up. I fired two bullets into the enemy closest to me and she fired an arrow into the one nearest her. I switched targets to the leader and she aimed at the other. The leader wasn't going to give up easily though. Before I was even aiming at him he had vaulted the cash register and put his gun under the clerks chin.
"So Half Blood" He had a grating voice, that spoke English like it wasn't a second language, more a third or fourth language "You are going to let me and my friend walk out of here and you are not going to harm us"
Just as he finished his proclamation/suggestion the window behind him exploded showering the clerk with shattered glass. The only reason that the monster wasn't covered in glass was the fact that he had disintegrated. This may have been caused by the spear that had flown through the window and right through his chest. Said spear was now wobbling innocently inside the wall. Alice took aim at the last creature and put an arrow through its skull. Once we were satisfied that all the creatures were dead I slid my gun back into its holster, picked up Dawnbringer and put that away and bought three packets of Pringles, one bottle of cherry coke and variety of chocolate bars.
