"Good Samaritans protected Rae and her theater." Luke commented concerning the pile of bodies and damage to the theater. "They came in wrecking the place and a number of dock workers took offense. They came over with shotguns and began defending the place."
Zach got a different statement from Officer Nick Stanslav. No longer Officer Stanslav. He also wasn't part of the Klan anymore. He had quit. He found they weren't willing to start taking lives. It was okay to talk about segregation and how morals were declining. To blame all of the problems of the United States on Negroes. But they weren't willing to kill. Not like the Southern Klan. All the Northern Klan were according to Nick was a all white social club.
"That was when I began to realize that it wasn't just the Negroes, with their Jazz and jungle dancing, it was all of the immoral people who were associated with that whole thing. People like fags, Rae North, Ellen Cross, Luke Mason and his people. All of their immoral ideas are spread by plays, movies, and radio. Even phonographic records." Nick told Zach in the interview room. "So, I decided to start small and work my way up. Rae North was immoral priestess who preached it from her pulpit of the theater stage. Her plays made fun of morality. Cuckold husbands, fags, and Negro music to accompany it. Most of her actors were bad enough, but she was the priestess of the Devil promoting all forms of immorality."
"How did you gain your following?" Zach asked. Officer Peters was there. As well as Ellen Cross who was typing out the interview.
"Just people who felt the way I did. That it wasn't really about the Negroes. I mean the Negroes aren't that smart after all." There was a stop in Ellen's typing as she stared at Nick.
"I find that most Negroes are smarter than many whites." Ellen drew a breath, gathered herself up and let the issue go.
"You would, you're one of those people who are part of Satan's lot." Nick said to Ellen, who resumed typing. "Why is she here, anyway? She shouldn't be here. She's the skirt of a gangster. You both know that. As immoral as they come. They aren't even married."
"She volunteered to type our interview." Zach told him. "Now, enough of that. Go on with what you were saying."
"Well, we figured that if the Negroes aren't smart enough to cause this downfall in our society. So it's white people." Nick glared at Ellen, as if daring her to disagree. "Like Rae North and her bushwa plays. I mean it's white people who are backing the Negro bands, record their Jazz music, promote their jungle dances. These Negroes are just out of the jungle how could they cause the immorality in our society today."
Ellen opened her mouth to speak, but Zach cut her off. "If you want to take notes, you can't engage with him. He's ignorant, let's leave it at that."
"I am not ignorant. You're the one whose ignorant. You don't understand, people like her are in league with Satan. Rae North is a whore of Satan, just as that woman is." Nick pointed at Ellen.
"Enough of that. Let's start with Galvin Mennes." Zach said.
Galvin was their first victim. They knew he was living close to the warehouse, so they were all waiting to follow him until they could find a place to ambush him. Gal had actually helped them by panicking and taking off into the maze of back alleys. John Forrest had also walked away from the theater and the others were waiting. Not just for him, but for someone to walk away. He was the least immoral according to Nick. Becka Vallends, the actress who made a habit of sleeping with Negroes, was the first one where someone had staked out the theater then called the others when she left. They had waited until she had actually proven she was sleeping with Negroes.
Ellen gathered up the papers. She handed them to Zach after the interview was over. She would type out another report when she got to Luke's office for Luke's own eyes. She left the interview room determined that she would hug 'her Clara' when she got home. Ellen had hated the Klan before, but now she hated all of the holier than thou racists Klan or not. The man made her sick.
"So, big boy. Is this all of it?" Rae put the papers down. "The little man decided that he was doing God's work by killing poor actors and actresses. I'm the great whore of Satan because I write what the people want."
"Pretty much." Zach said.
"I hope you hang the bastard, he doesn't deserve to live after killing these people. Immoral or not they were harmless, they weren't hurting anyone, but themselves." Rae let out a sigh. "What about Ellen and her lot. Are they in trouble?"
"Ellen typed out the report." Zach smiled, remembering when she asked to do it. Knowing she was fishing for information. "I let her do it, because I knew that Luke's men were the one's who saved you, not some random group of dock workers. As far as I'm concerned they were being 'good Samaritans' in a way. I might have a beef with Luke Mason and his gang later on, but at present they stopped another murder and eliminated most of the gang that was doing the killing. Possibly saving the lives of my men in doing so."
"So, you aren't going to prosecute any of them." Rae was thankful and said so.
"Let's just say that all I could get would be the little fish, now if I could find the evidence and the motive to convict Ellen Cross and Luke Mason, I would have, but since I don't. This time they get to go their own way."
"All the same, thank you."
"You've suffered enough for no real reason." Zach said. "People may call you immoral, but the woman I've gotten to know is a decent person. You didn't deserve the pain Nick caused you. Those people, no matter how loose their morals, didn't deserve to die either. If I had tried to prosecute Luke Mason or Ellen Cross, even if I could, it would only have caused you more pain."
Zach watched Rae leave his office. He wondered how many decent people were hurt by those who felt they were immoral. All of these deaths caused by a man who felt he had the right to judge other people. What right had Nick Stanslav to judge these people? If there was any judgment to be done it wasn't by Nick, Zach, or any other man or woman, only God had the right to judge another persons' actions.
Of course, a man would judge Nick. The man with the proper authority. After he was convicted by a jury selected for that purpose. Hopefully under God's wisdom and performing God's will.
Nick had talked about Satan, Zach had to wonder if it was Satan who was misleading Nick, instead the people he had killed. Of course, that was Zach's problem, he thought too much. A bad habit for someone who looks like a baby grand piano and wasn't suppose to think at all.
