“The one thing that doesn't abide by
majority rule is a person's conscience.”

| Harper Lee - To kill a mockingbird |

'Do you remember
the winter wind
between snowflakes and rain,
white trees and memories lived?
We were just as the stories
would describe us,
we were happy.
Our tears were speaking our love,
my own clothes full of your scent,
my own lies the cause of your pain.

Back then, you asked me
if I had to do
what I did.
The truth is, I didn't have to.
But then,
my reflection would have turned away from me
the eyes watching the river,
full of shame,
the frail hands tainted in red,
how can one live this way?

You asked if it was worth
the end of our promises,
the end of our bedtime stories.
And, we both know
only a man who got nothing to lose
can give his whole
for the page to turn.
So, I tried.

I followed the petal called conscience,
and as its flower bloomed
their glares became unbearable.

I had betrayed, I had done wrong
I was to blame,
and the majority won.
Because we weren't like any others,
and because the world doesn't need to be changed
for them to keep being strong,
we were thrown in the sea
made of the sad reality.

Digging their nails into the black cover
of a book called truth;
a nice title,
they had been saying,
a beautiful lie,
we had been writing.
Oh- how ignorant are the ones believing
the nothing and everything
behind their words,
and let's shut the mouth
of the ones shaking their heads.

We lost, my love,
I lost.
But in one's ear, maybe we've been heard.
They will then recollect
the bit of hope drowning underwater
and finally, we will watch as a soul
going against the rule,
will change the play for a better future.
This is war, my love;
we just lost the first battle.'

Author's note :
This was greatly inspired by a book I totally loved reading, To Kill a Mockingbird.
History is made of people who tried and managed to break the rules, and to change the world. Going against what the majority believed, rocks were thrown at them and shame was thrown on their names.
But their words heard by even one person, made the change.

Thank you for reading.
