The night went on with Sebastian and I learning more about each other. “No, step forward, then to the right” I corrected, as I moved Sebastian’s feet with mine.

“Are you this demanding with your boyfriend?” he joked, pulling me closer unintentionally as we began to dance again.

“If I had a boyfriend, maybe I would be. Who knows.” I laughed. Sebastian’s eyes were easy to get lost in so I tried to prevent myself from doing so.

“oh, so you’re not together with Gabe? I mean- I just assumed.” Sebastian seemed as if he said something completely terrible.

“no, Gabe loves his boyfriend very much. But you’re not the first to say that, so many people think that since I own the studio with him.” I adjusted his hand on my waist. As I was about to begin dancing with him again, I placed my hands on his waist. Gently, but also sternly, I showed him how he needed to turn for the next move. I could feel his defined torso under my unsteady fingers.

“Other than Gabe, is there another man in your life?” he asked, taking my hand back into his.

“Nope. Not anymore, it’s just me and my three year old daughter” I said.

“Oh so you have a daughter? What about her father?” he asked, and immediately knew that he shouldn’t have asked.

“It’s just her and I. Her father is out of the picture. So how long have you and Scarlett been together?” I asked, trying to change the subject.

“About a year” he said, looking down at me a smiling.

“Only a year? Wow that seems a little short, don’t you think?” I asked, turning away from his gaze.

“She insisted on getting married, so I agreed” he breathed out heavily.

“Well don’t you love her?” I asked.

He stopped dancing, looked down at me, and then continued to sway about the room with me. Obviously trying to avoid the subject. Over the remainder of the hour, Sebastian would occasionally glance at me for long periods of time. His eyes were full of wonder and his lips were parted ever so slightly as if he had something to say, but couldn’t bring himself to say it. Some of his hair began to fall over his forehead and covered his eyes, but I knew they were still locked on me.

The door of our studio swung open, Gabe and Scarlett walked in. Abruptly, I stopped dancing and walked over to Gabe while Scarlett walked over to Sebastian. I could hear her whispering to him about how terrible the class was. Amused, I looked up at Gabe and he had a smile plastered across his face. “Can’t please ‘em all” He stated as he looked down at me.

“Okay, so for the last hour, you both learned your part, now dance together” I said, trying to contain my eagerness to see how they did. The dance was painful to watch, the clumsiness and the lack of connection between the two. “more like this” I pulled Gabe to the middle of the room and began to dance with him. Our dance was fluent and natural, how a dance between two people should be. How a relationship between two people should be.
