Tiana

It's already 11 PM yet I still can't sleep. I'm thinking about tomorrow. The flight's going to be long since it's US to Philippines. The distance isn't a joke. That's why I'm leaving early in the morning.

Even though I'm only taking my Christmas break, it seems like I'm going to be gone like... for how many months or years. Maybe I just got used to spending my holidays with the Smiths. That's probably why I'm feeling very anxious right now.

My ethnicity isn't pure. My dad's Canadian while my mom is a Filipina. How did they meet? I don't really know. They just told me that dad went for a vacation in the Philippines and they stayed in a resort owned by mom's family. That's how they first met each other. I was born somewhere in Pampanga so that makes me a Kapampangan. Yet I don't know how to speak like one. The only sentences I know are: Tabalu (I don't know) and Mayap a abak (Good morning). And oh, I also know Yaku i Tiana which is an essential for introducing myself because that obviously means "I am Tiana".

It makes me feel excited because finally, I'm coming home. But at some point in my life, I also want to not end this day. I just... I feel like something unpleasant would happen once I got back there.

I want to have some air fresh from Ohio before I leave.

I got up from my bed and went outside. The moon's shining so bright as usual. The streets were really quiet and cold—it was dark too for the people here in the neighbourhood are already asleep. I closed my eyes and enjoy this serenity I'm facing right now.

"Hey. Why are you still awake?"

It's Alexa. No need to open my eyes. I know her voice, of course. She's my best friend.

"Hm, nothing. Just bothered."

"About what?"

"Tomorrow's flight."

"I'm going to miss you." That's my cue for me to open my eyes. I looked at her with sad eyes and saw her beside me. She has this gloomy look in her face. "Me too." I tried to twitch up the corners of my lips but instead, tears started to fall from my eyes.

She hugged me and chuckled quietly. "We're being dramatic as hell when you're coming back right after the holidays."

Right.
