Korean entertainment giant SM Entertainment, the company behind popular K-pop groups like Super Junior and Girls' Generation, unveiled its new girl group Red Velvet on Monday (July 28), reported Korean media.
Red Velvet is the company's first music group since boy band EXO's debut in 2012, and its first girl group since the debut of f(x) in 2009.
The quartet is made up of Seul-gi, Irene and Wendy, members of a trainee team called SM Rookies, as well as Joy, who was also groomed by the company.
"Red Velvet brings together velvet, which is associated with softness and femininity, and the colour red, which is associated with passionate feelings. Red Velvet seeks to impress the world with their sophisticated music and polished performances," said SM Entertainment.
The girls will release their first single "Happiness" online on August 4.
