Summer [Nanase Haruka x Reader] - FREE!

“It’s a promise, we will be together forever!” 

It was your third year in Iwatobi High School along with your childhood friend who was then your beloved boyfriend, Nanase Haruka. The vice captain of the swimming club and a swimmer who often insisted he only swims freestyle. You both have been dating for over three years. Despite Haruka silent demeanor, he is quite bold to what he wants. He was the first one to confess to you back in middle school. It was quite amusing to see him trying his best to get those words out of him but in the end, everything turns out good or so you thought…

You were walking down the hallway when you stopped abruptly. Your [E/C] fixed to a certain raven-haired swimmer staring at the school swimming pool opposite the classroom block. You were in the third floor when your eyes spotted him coughing his lungs out. You furrowed as you walked closer to the window. The coughing looked painful as the swimmer usual blank face scrunched in pain. One of his hands covering his mouth whiles another hand holding onto his chest. He turns into a ball as the cough kept on painfully continued. 

Worried, you quickly ran down the stairs as fast as you could. You knew Haruka has always been the healthiest among the rest of his teammates. He was the one who often took care of you when you are sick. He barely caught a cold in his entire life but for him to look so sick… 

You pant heavily when you reached the swimming club pool. Your orbs searched for your boyfriend. Your head felt a little dizzy from lack of oxygen. You heard splash of water in the pool. Your line of sight falls on the one you searched.  There he was, sitting by the pool, staring at the water. 

‘Odd…I could have sworn he was…’

However, you noticed something was wrong. To anyone else, he is merely staring at the water but to you, he looked like he has a lot in his mind.  For someone who loves the water so much, only sat at the side was an unusual behavior. 

“Haru?” you approached him. It took him a few second to notice you were by his side. His sea blue orbs were filled with sadness before he quickly replaced with his usual blank gaze and expression, “______, when did you came here?” you were perplexed by his odd behavior but you dismissed the thought earlier and smiled at him. 

You put your shoes away as you joined him. Dipping your foot into the cool water that Haruka loves so much, “Just a few minutes ago, thought I’d drop by here since you weren’t there in class earlier.” Playfully, you moved your foot a little in the water. The water feels good against your skin. 

“I see.” 

Minutes passed by, you both enjoyed company of each other in the silentness as you watched the cherry blossoms drops onto the water. Like a large canvas of blue, the soft pink of the flowers decorated across the canvas. 

Suddenly, you felt a firm grip on your hands. You shift your gaze from the pool to your side, where Haruka held your hand gently yet firmly. Usually his hands were warm but this time, its freezing cold and you could feel slight trembles from the swimmer hands, “Haru…what’s wrong? You’re trembling.” 

He quickly pulls his hands away. He was avoiding your gaze as he stood up, “It’s nothing. I was in the water far too long anyway. It had gotten a little cold.” He grabs his jacket as he drapes it on his shoulder, “Class is starting, it’s best if we make a move now.” You watch his back walking further away from you. 

‘Why does it felt like this would be the last time I will see his back…’

You didn’t notice the splatters of bloods on the white tile floor behind you.
