I heard the door rattle and shake. "Jade, unlock this door! I heard something! Are you ok? Jade! Open this door!" There was silence for a moment. Then..... "It's going to be alright. I know you're scared right now, but everything will be just fine." Another pause....."Just.....Just stay there. I will be back with the key. Just be patient."
I didn't know this at the time, but Mom knew exactly what was going on. You see, we are a part of a tribe known as Na Daoine Tiodhlac, which is Scottish Geltic for the gifted ones. Our tribe came from Scotland with the first pioneers. We had traveled much farther in land then and settled near what is now the panhandle national forest in Idaho. Our people had made friends with the natives living there at the time. We had agreed to never hunt more than we needed and to respect their land and in return our families that had children too young to achieve their blessed form could hide among them from the pale faces that hunted us.
So as you could imagine, Mom was not shocked or scared when she opened the door and removed my covers. She was proud, for she could finally return home with her daughter.
That night she transformed, and we ran home together.
