To Save the Sea

They both stood over the river as it rushed over them, seemingly harmless but the furrow of the boy’s brow told everything and the concerned look in her eyes. “It seems to be safe enough, Percy…” she said uneasily. He shook his head, the water reflecting off of his green eyes.

“I don’t know why, Annabeth, but it just seems… wrong. Like there’s some kind of undercurrent.” Percy finally replied, obviously carefully wording his phrase. “Just… don’t fall in. I’m not sure I can control it.” She looked up, startled, but he had already turned away and was walking down the narrow path, his hand occasionally brushing against his pocket where he kept a ballpoint pen. Annabeth cast one glance at the water, which seemed to be blacker now, gulped, and sped up to catch up with her companion.

She felt her heart stop when the edge crumbled and Percy fell into the river. “PERCY!” She screamed, running forward. The Son of Poseidon’s eyes were closed, and a slight trail of blood was in the water. Knocked unconscious. She realized, and kicked her shoes off, before she made a smooth dive into the raging water. She cut through the currents, gasping heavily as it fought against her and she reached Percy. Gently, tenderly she wrapped her arm around him and began to swim toward shore, when suddenly the water began to suck her in. She looked over her shoulder and her eyes widened as she saw that the water was literately disappearing. No, no, no, no! She thought desperately, kicking against the current and feeling a sudden surge around her. She felt her head go down under and she kicked back up, gasping for breath before she went back under. Tears blurred at her eyes and she tried to kick up again, but she couldn’t reach the surface. Terror surged through her as she realized that she was really going to die.

Please, Percy… she thought as her brain shut down. Don’t let me drown…

Nothing happened, and she finally surrendered to the unknown. How fitting… Annabeth Chase dies trying to keep her boyfriend, the son of Poseidon, from drowning.

A harsh, heartbroken scream sounded through the night.
