Brandy stayed over that night, and we hopped the fence together on our way to school.
The halls were overcrowded, as usual as we pushed our way to our lockers.
We were walking together to homeroom when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around, greeted by the person I least expected to see.
Sam was standing there, looking down at me with a bright smile on his handsome face.
"Hi there," he said.
"Hi," I said with a laugh.
"How are you doing?" he asked, sounding genuinely concerned.
I shrug, "I'm used to it."
He turned serious, "that's not something that you should get used to."
I shrugged not sure what I should say, "it's fine, Chanel is Chanel, nothing's going to change."
"Yeah," he nods, we somehow ended up right in front of the classroom, "I'll," he pauses, "see you around." With a wink, he walks away.
I purse my lips and nod lightly at the words. He's making fun of me.
"What was that?" Brandy practically screams.
"Nothing," I back away from her slightly.
"N-nothing," she breathes with a scoff, "that was something," she gives me a pointed look. We sit down in the same spots as yesterday.
I shake my head, "no. It was nothing. Sam and I. We are... acquaintances. Nothing more."
"For now," I look at her with a blank look and she puts her hands up in mock surrender, "hey, I'm just saying that if he happens to drown in a lake, I'll obviously be with you, and I'll push you to give him CPR, okay."
I crease my brows, "um, why would we be at a lake with Sam?"
"It was hypothetical!" she yells and my eyes widen and I lean back from her.
"Jeez, okay."
She smiles, "I ship it." I huff and look away from her, pulling out my phone, "pfft, you are seriously ignoring me?" I continue to look at my phone, "fine."
We continue like this for only a few moments before Brandy can't help herself, "I have kind of a bad feeling about Zane."
I look up at her in confusion, "huh?"
"I was thinking about it last night, and his words just... they didn't seem right."
"Because he called me pretty," I said, more of a statement than a question.
"No," she replied without hesitation, "but he just said it so suddenly, didn't even try to slide in the compliment."
"Maybe he is just, straight forward," I offered.
"Maybe. But did he seem like he meant it? I mean he didn't even check you out or anything."
"What about when we were passing the ball around?"
"I guess, it just seemed weird to me. Maybe I'm wrong, but call it best friend intuition."
I hummed a "mhm." It did seem a bit odd. He had never talked to me before and then out of the blue he calls me pretty.
Nah, it's just us overthinking the situation.
"It's whatever," I shrug. There is no point in us getting worked up over one guy that complimented one of us. It probably wouldn't happen again. Well, someone complimenting me. Brandy gets them all the time.
