How come you weren’t with her! She called you twice!”
I could hear bits and pieces of the argument that was at hand but I couldn’t see. The voices were muddled, but I could make out my dad’s voice. My eyes felt heavy and my body felt like one big bruise.
My eyes didn’t want to open, the light was too blinding.
“Dad?”
My voice was scratchy and when I spoke it hurt like hell.
“Dad?”
I heard feet rushing towards me, to wherever the hell I was.
“ Sage! Oh thank God! What do you need sweetheart? Water? Another blanket?”
“No dad. I’m fine, really. Just shut the damn lights off it’s to bright in here.”
I heard him shuffle away and seconds later the lights went off.
Slowly my eyes fluttered open, and I guess I thought we would have been in the hospital but I recognized our ceiling fan from our house. I leaned up on my elbows and took in our living room.
Dad’s shadow came through the door and I could finally make out his face.
“ Hi dad.”
I smiled at him and he returned it with his own weak smile. He must have been so worried.
“Who were you yelling at ?”
He huffed and ran his hand over his face scratching his beard.
“ That no good blonde lazy asshole you call a friend.”
“ HEY!”
Another voice joined the party and sure enough Erik’s head poked into the room. He deadpanned at my dad, obviously annoyed at what dad had said. His blonde hair was a mess like he’d run his hands through it like he does when he is nervous. He and dad under careful observation from me, both had dark circles under their eyes.
“ How long?”
Dad sighed.
“A couple hours, but you had us running in circles. You are lucky that I saw the note on my desk about Willam because if I hadn’t, he wouldn’t have told me you went to the Gibbler’s.”
He shifted on the coffee table and Erik had walked in and was leaning on the wall near our tv set. Dad was fidgeting with his fingers. I could read him like an open book, he had questions lots of questions. When I looked over at Erik his jaw was clenched and his arms were crossed. Something was up.
“Will one of you two stubborn males just spit out whatever it is you want to say.”
Erik blew a fuse.
“Why in the hell were you in the hills in the first place! You haven’t talked to Jared Gibbler in
years, what the fuck was so important sage! You were barely conscious when Your dad and I found you, you were mumbling weird things, and drawing in the dirt. What happened out there.”By the end of Erik’s rant he had moved to sit near my legs on the couch. He wouldn’t look at me and he rubbed his palms over his jeans. I couldn’t remember them finding me, or writing in the dirt. The only thing I could remember were those eyes, that wolf was the only thing on my mind.
“ Sage?”
My dad spoke softly from the coffee table and put his hand on my shoulder to comfort me. I watched him confused as he swiped his finger under my eye. Tears had fallen to my cheeks without me even feeling them.
