"It's just another day" I sigh to myself as I attempt to open my very unpredictable locker. My locker was smashed in between two very long hallways. One held our high school Varsity Football team where my best friend was leading the mob, and the other held a group of popular girls that probably only talked about the hottest guys in school or if they were going to the mall this weekend. I kept my focus until my best friend Kade appeared at the locker next to mine.
"Hey, hey!" He exclaimed. I shut my locker and gave him my full attention. "Hey 'Mr. Most Popular On The Football Team'" I joked. "Very funny Elliot, I'm not most popular, I'm just very popular" he smirked.
"Yeah yeah, what's going on man?"
"Dude, we annihilated the Spartans last night. We already knew they were a trash competition, but my god!" He face palmed. "Well duh, The royals are nothing to play with. We have the best team in the district" I said. "I know that, but if your team is gonna be that garbage, just stay home". I laughed super hard at that. "Kade you are really something else" I shook my head. Kade's girlfriend slowly came up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist. "Hi babe, hi Elliot" she said with an extremely white smile on her face. Leila was Captain of the Cheerleading Team, so she and Kade were always on the same boat. When they're both together, I typically give them their space. That was until I saw this blonde girl with ocean blue eyes talking to a group of other girls. I stared for a while longer.
There was just something about her that just drew me in, and I can't even put in to words the feeling I'm experiencing.
"Wait wait no, you're gay. You-are-gay!!" I said to myself over and over again, but it did absolutely nothing. I left Leila and Kade to their couple-y
Things and I went up to the angelic girl I couldn't keep my eyes off of.
I tapped on her shoulder and her luscious curls swung across her shoulder and she turned to face me.
"Hi" she said. Her face was so bright and her skin was clear
"Uh..hi!" I replied doing my best to hide my nervousness
"I'm Sarah, what's your name?"
"Oh I'm Elliot. It's nice to meet you Sarah!" My nervousness began to slowly fade away after I noticed she did have interest in talking to me.
"Hi Elliot, are you new here?"
"No actually, people just don't notice me often" I tried to maintain a smile
"Oh, I'm sorry that happens to you. Well, how about we get some frozen yogurt after school? I can meet you at YogurtLand at Five. I want to get to know you more" She said flashing me another smile
"Sounds like a deal!" I said excitedly
"Alright cool! See you then" she waves goodbye.
I turned around and Kade was right behind me.
"Hey man, Leila's gone. So what were you doing?"
"Oh, pfft, nothing" I wave my hand downward
"You are a terrible liar" Kade scoffs
"I somehow am hanging out with a blonde haired, blue eyed girl named Sarah at Five at YogurtLand"
"Wait Sarah Delaney??" Kade asks in pure shock
"Uh, yeah..?" I reply hesitantly
"Dude, how did you- what?!"
"I really have no idea. I just went up to talk to her and I guess she has interest in wanting to be my friend" I said. "That's crazy man!" He still remained shocked. "Wait, does she know you're-"
"We—haven't gotten that far yet" I cut him off
"Alright, understandable!" He said. "Well try not to let the anticipation of the school day eat you up and good luck at Five. Don't do anything weird!" He puts a finger in my face. I laughed and grabbed his wrist. "I will not do anything weird, I promise". We did our handshake and parted our separate ways.
I know Kade told me not to let the anticipation eat me up, but how could I not? I was more excited than nervous, but I was still pretty nervous. I haven't had friends that are girls in so long. I mean, unless my mom counts. You would think as a gay boy, all of my friends are girls. Not Elliot Dailey, all of my friends are guys.
School was over before I knew it, and time ticked faster and faster. I fixed my hair in my bathroom mirror and sprayed a Ralph Lauren cologne. I Gave my mom a kiss before I got into my gold Chevy Impala and left the driveway. YogurtLand was only 10 miles away, but it felt like 40. Los Angeles Traffic is nothing to mess around with. I entered yogurt land and patiently waited for Sarah, who was only 3 minutes behind me. We prepared the same flavor of frozen yogurt, and I watched her dump a massive amount of gummy bears on top of her bowl. We laughed as she struggled to hold it together. Once we were seated, we finally began to talk.
"So, tell me about yourself" I started the conversation. "Well, I'm on the Royals Dance Team as well as a Year book media influencer" she said.
"That's what you do, but I wanna know about you" I said fixing another spoonful of frozen yogurt
She paused for a minute and her eyes lit up.
"I've never been told anything like that. Everyone just wants to know what I'm good at so I can do stuff for them". I stopped chewing. "I never want to use what you're good at, unless I absolutely have to. I want to know what you like to do, what you like to watch, what you like to eat, all of that. If we're gonna be friends, I have to know you" I said. The genuine smile on this girl's face took over my entire body.
"I love to spend time with my family and cuddle with my dog. I also love to help people and make people laugh and smile. I love to watch Star Wars, all the Cartoon Network shows, and Avatar the last Airbender. Lastly, I love Frozen Yogurt, which is why we're here". My eyes got big. "I love all of those shows! We should watch together sometime!"
"Definitely! Oh my god, I can't believe someone actually likes the things that I do!" Her cheeks turned pink.
"I like you, Elliot"
"I like you too, Sarah"
