Nesta hugged her knees to her chest and stared at the crackling fire. She was deep in thought, thinking up ways to make Cassian suffer and bleed.
It was his fault they were stuck on this godforsaken beach, his fault that they couldn't find those documents for Rhys and Feyre, his fault she hadn't taken a bath in nearly a week.
As soon as they got home she would kill him. Slowly. Just to hear him beg for mercy and say she was right. Make him admit that they shouldn't have gone into the territory of hostile mortals without a solid plan. He should have ignored the faerie-hating human who called Nesta an abomination. And he really should not have tried to flirt his way into that damn fortress to secure the papers.
But he did. Because he was Cassian. Because he was a complete idiot.
Nesta rubbed warmth into her arms and scooted closer to the fire. She hissed at the scrape of sand in her pants. Not only had Cassian forced her to wear Illyrian leathers on this ridiculous escapade, but he forced her to spend the night on a beach. Sand was everywhere. Everywhere. She was only sitting. How was it even possible to get it in her undergarments?
The sound of powerful wings grew closer and a familiar dark figure fell from the sky. Nesta shot to her feet as he continued to fall and didn't slow down.
She cupped her mouth with her hands and shouted, "CASSIAN, YOU'll CRASH!!" He couldn't hear. But as she looked closer she thought maybe he was unconscious.
Her heart started beating too fast and she ran across the beach, closer to the water. "CASSIAN!" She screamed desperately.
Just before he hit the rocky water, his wings snapped out and he banked. Nesta gasped as he came straight for her. She ducked and covered her head and Cassian landed with a whoosh on the sand beside her.
He was grinning. "You almost sound as if you care."
She stalked back to the fire as quick as the sand would allow and sat again. "Did you catch anything?"
Cassian lifted a stick with a knife tied to it. One fish. He'd caught one fish and it wasn't even that big. He handed Nesta the stick.
"I catch it, you cook it."
She scoffed. "If I touch that thing the smell will be on my hands for days."
Cassian gave her a look. She knew that look. It was his 'up-to-no-good' look. She was just about to push herself away from him when the fish plopped into her lap. With a shriek she flung it straight into the fire.
"Damn it, you brute!"
He reached into the fire to grab the fish, hissing at the heat. "Damn it, you witch!" He tossed it from hand to hand until it cooled down. "You know you're supposed to gut it first."
