two weeks later
Roman and I spend all of our time together. Despite knowing he was hiding a secret from me, I still felt extremely safe and comfortable around him. There was nothing that could stop me from being happy with him, even when he tried to hint at his 'secret'.
Things were weird, though. I'd bring him over, and Sparky would freak out and growl at Roman. He used to do the same thing to Zane, but Annie ended up just putting him in her bedroom when he would come over. Maybe he just hates men in general.
Roman began being more conservative when it came to where his family came from. Of course I knew everyone in his family on a first name basis, but I would never be able to point them out in a crowd. I've never seen them— except for Kota and KC, that is.
My mother and father started to become aware of the man I'd been bringing around. Annie could never really keep her mouth shut, so it didn't really surprise me when my mom called asking about Roman.
Today, though, Roman was doing meetings with his father in Florida. He wouldn't be back until tomorrow. I was bummed, of course, because my schedule really only consisted of working, eating, hanging out with Roman, and sleeping.
I decided to take a walk. I found the same trail Roman took me on the day we saw the owners pet wolf, but of course during the day. It was just as pretty in the daytime as it was at night. My earbuds blared music as I took in the cold air into my lungs, the breeze blowing snow over the cement. It was peaceful.
"Hey!" I heard someone shout faintly over the sound of piano in my head. "Kailani!"
I pulled my earbuds out and looked around, finally turning to see Zane close behind me. I furrowed my brows and kept walking, not wanting to hear about what he had to say about my love interest now.
"Kai! C'mon, babe, wait up," he said, joining me at my side.
"Don't call me that," I said sternly, furrowing my brows. "You're dating my best friend, for God's sakes. Now, what do you want?"
"Listen, I've got to tell you something about Roman," he said, grabbing my shoulders and keeping me in place.
"I want to hear what you have to say about Roman. It's always something negative," I said, ripping from his grasp. "And frankly, I don't care what you think about him. You're not important to me, so your opinion on him means nothing to me,"
"Kai, this isn't an opinion," he groaned, crossing his arms. "Roman is—"
"I don't care what you have to say, Zane!" I shouted, turning to walk back towards my car. "Leave me alone,"
"Roman isn't what he says he is!" he shouted to me.
"Whatever!" I shouted back before he was there again, grabbing ahold of me. "Zane, stop!"
"You have to know something. You and him aren't going to work out. You and I are meant to be together, Kailani," he said as I struggled in his arms.
"Stop, Zane!" I cried out as his grip on me became tighter.
"Hey! Let her go!" a woman shouted before we both looked in her direction. She was dressed in all faux fur, her dark curls framing her face nicely as she walked towards us.
"Who are you?" Zane spat, furrowing his brows.
"I'm Trinity," she said, linking her arm with mine. "I'm Kailani's friend."
"You are?" he asked as I moved away from him.
"Mhm. Now, I suggest you run along, little doggie. Run back home. It's cold out here for someone as thin and bone-y as you," she said matter-of-factly, making me want to laugh.
