"How was your chat with the guys?" I asked, sliding my hand into Roman's after he returned. He flashed a slightly pointed look before smiling softly.

"It was fine," he said, squeezing my hand.

"Good," I said as we walked through the hallway, images of Roman's pack plastered on the wall. "Trinity and I just sat talking,"

"What about? I can't read you," he said sternly, furrowing his eyebrows slightly.

"She was just telling me about the changing process," I said, making his red gaze snap over to me. "About the medical process and the mating process,"

"Why? Why were you talking about that?" he asked quickly, taking me aback at his harshness.

"Sh-She just brought it up, I don't know," I said, pulling my hand away from his. "Did you not want me to know that you could change me?"

"Do you want to be changed?" he asked, grabbing my arms to hold me in place. I stammered on my words before his grip grew tighter. "Don't lie to me, either, Kai."

"I-I mean, I guess at some point I'd like to be immortal with you," I mumbled, backing away from him. "Do you not want me to?"

"Kai, it isn't like that—"

"You can't lie, either, Roman. It's not fair," I said, crossing my arms as I felt what could've been heartbreak.

"Honestly, Kailani, no. I don't want you to be a Hybrid," he spat, making my expression fall, taking another step away from him.

"You don't want to change me?" I asked softly.

"I won't ask you to be immortal for me. I won't ask you to leave your family," he said sternly, crossing his arms. "I won't take you from them."

"Why? Even if I want to?" I asked, furrowing my eyebrows.

"It sucks leaving your family, Kailani. I haven't seen my biological family because they're dead now. I don't want to put you through that," he growled, sending slight fear through me as he gritted his teeth.

"I want to be immortal with you," I said, letting my arms fall to my sides.

"I don't want you to be immortal," he said simply, making me nod.

"I would rather live a whole eternity with you and without my family than have to die knowing you'll live on to eventually love someone else," I said weakly before slipping past him and to the back door. I jogged outside into the field, where I found a clear, flat spot, sitting down to start bawling into my hands.

I couldn't tell you why I felt so strongly about Roman. I am just human, after all. It's not like fate attracts me to him, but the opposite way around. I don't understand.

"Babygirl, I'm sorry," Roman sighed as I felt his presence behind me. His arms wrapped around my waist as he pulled me back into him, his lips pressing to my neck. I forced myself to think the word 'stop' over and over again as I squeezed my eyes shut, not responding to his touch. "Kailani, please look at me, baby. I didn't mean to make you cry,"

"Just leave me alone for a minute, Roman," I finally said, making him sigh softly.

"As you wish," he said before kissing my shoulder, then standing up to walk slowly away.

I spent over an hour just sitting in the field, thinking. I wasn't sure why Roman wouldn't want to change me. It didn't make sense. Wouldn't you want to change your mate to be with you forever? That's how this Wolf thing works, right?

"Are you alright, Kai?" one of the twins asked, making me look back to see Jey.

"I guess," I said softly.
