It was another sleepless night. Another night with a tight grip on her phone. And another night waiting for the boy who claimed to love her to understand how much he was taring her down. Hannah didn't know how much more she could take. Her heart was fully in it and she'd given everything to her, more or less, boyfriend, Murray.
She didn't really know why. And to this day she still doesn't. But that girl--that manipulative girl who had a deep past with Murray--always seemed to be there. Hannah would be with Murray and she'd text him. Hannah would go out of town and she'd be at his house way into the night for a "movie night". And most recently, even after Hannah had told her oh-so-caring boyfriend how she felt about his relationship with this other girl, she shows up at his hockey game. It may not seem like much, but it really ate at Hannah. She'd never been the kind to get jealous. Hannah absolutely hated this version of herself.
Those gut feelings were always tugging at Hannah. From the second month into the relationship she knew there was something wrong. But never could put her finger on it. Now, eight months down the road, she was ready to end it. Her emotions were there. And Hannah made it very clear she needed this girl out of his life if they could ever work it out.
She held her breath, and sent that one long text, explaining that she didn't know how much longer she could make this work. Almost immediately there was a reply. Then another. Then another. Then a phone call. All of which she ignored. All of which brought her to tears for reasons she couldn't explain.
But the thing is, the replies she got were so halfhearted. They were only meant to keep her on the hook. To make her want to stay. Maybe this is what made her choke on her own tears. The unnoticed feeling of everything in this relationship losing meaning. He was such a bastard.
She knew it. So why did Hannah stay? Well, she couldn't even answer that for you.
