I wake up curled up in the corner of the bedroom. A small puddle of water rests next to my face, my cheeks are still wet from the nightmares I had all night, the demons had given me another horror to deal with in my life. The dream involved that night, but it wasn't about me, my sister, or even the Harolese. It was about the people, the innocent souls that paid for my mistake in losing control of my ability. I saw faces of the people I had caused to lose their lives. I shift and hit my head on the door.
"Ow." I say as I rub my head tiredly.
A knock sounds at the door, I slowly get up and open it. Steve is standing there, he has a towel over his shoulder and his sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms. He gives me a concerned look and asks if I'm OK. I nod and begin to close the door and I realize that Steve was standing in my part of the cabin. I stop closing the door and all of a sudden I'm a hundred percent awake.
"Wait, what are you doing in my cabin?" I ask.
"Oh, um, I heard you crying and I thought you could use some company." He says looking back at the containers holding the food that was made for us. His container is three times the size of mine. I feel something vibrate in my mind. S.H.I.E.L.D. helped me figure out that someone was either lying or hiding something from me. Wait how is he here?
"How did you get in here."
"Oh, the door." He says pointing back at the door on the other side of the room. I nod and look back up Steve.
"OK, may I have a few minutes." I ask and he nods. I shut the door in his face and run to change clothes. I choose a black t-shirt with a pair of blue exercise shorts. I put my gym shoes on and quickly put my hair up into a ponytail. I walk out of the room and join Steve at the table. He waited for me to sit down before he started to eat the eggs and toast.
"Why did you really come into my part of the cabin?" I ask as I dig into my eggs. Steve stops and looks up from his eggs. He's wearing a pair of sweatpants with a white t-shirt.
"I don't lie." He says as he digs into his eggs again.
"Then you told only half of the truth." I say. Steve puts his utensils down and leans back in his chair.
"Like I said I don't lie. I did here you crying and that is more so the reason why I want to join you for breakfast but the other reason is because I can't be alone for long either." He looks down at his food. "I've been alone for almost seventy years in that ship in the middle of nowhere. I've been frozen during that time too, which I believe is the reason I survived all those years." I remember Barton saying he was a pretty chill dude... OHMYGOD! I try so hard not to smile at the thought of what Barton was trying to tell me while saying a small joke, it especially doesn't help that Steve is basically opening up to a ten year old girl as she tries not to laugh. I freeze when I see his eyes water.
"Are you OK?"
"Yeah, it's just hard to adapt to all of this." He says as he wipes his tears with his arm.
"Yeah, I understand." Steve looks up at me and takes another bite of his breakfast. "About a year ago, I came to here with my sister. We came here as an escape from the Harolese, an alien race, and yeah." I decide not to tell him any more unless he asks me.
"The Harolese, is that a new country or secret government." He asks crossing his arms.
"Kind of." I say as I set down my fork. Steve raises his eyebrows. "Fine, do you want the full truth?"
"Do you want to tell me the whole truth?" He asks. "'Cause kid, I won't make you say any of it if you don't want to."
I just shrug again. "I don't want to make you see me as many others see me."
"Why would I look at you differently?" He asks.
"You just will." I say, because it's true, when he finds out what I did, he won't want to ever join me for breakfast or even look at me the same, like everyone else when word got out that I was that girl.
"I won't," He says, "I promise, and I don't lie."
"OK, I'll start from the beginning." I say and I do, or at least as far as I can remember. I tell him about Haroly, how I was controlled and controlled my sister, how I escaped for the first time I escaped while being in a simulation sort of thing, how I met with others who helped me. I decided not to tell him about Asgard, I don't know why but something tells me not to. I continue on to tell him that my sister was being controlled by my sister and how she brought me to Chicago. I told him how she had died but I didn't tell him what happened in Chicago, because that is where everyone begins to hate me.
"Why would you think I would look at you differently?" He asks.
"I don't know, everyone did when they find out who I am." I say.
He pauses before beginning his sentence. "If I may ask, what did you mean you could 'control your sister'?"
"I have abilities." I say making a small ball of flame show up in my hand. "I'm not sure how I received them or where I came from. All I know is that they were given to me for a reason." I let the flame dance around my fingertips as Steve looks at my hands in total disbelief.
"What kind of abilities." He asks his eyes scrunched.
"Time, mind and some kind of purple ability." I say making the flame change to the designated power color as I say them. "I'm not sure if they may represent something, or if they will help me with the time to come." I say letting the flame die out. "What's your story?"
"Wait, what do you mean 'time, mind and some kind of purple ability'?"
"I can alter time and the mind. The mind ability helped me control my sister and put things into her mind. I'm still trying to figure out the purple ability, it is strange." I say as flashbacks of me using it begin to enter my mind.
"My story, um, I don't know where to begin." He says as he scoffs and takes a sip from the milk.
"How about the beginning." I offer and he smiles.
"Well, then we better get comfortable because this is a pretty long story." He says. "Ever since I was a kid, I had one best friend, his name was James, but everyone called him Bucky." I see a small smile form on his lips as he continues on with his story. He tells the story as if it happened last week. He tells me about how he grew up in Brooklyn with Bucky as his best friend, he told me how he was there even when he had nothing. He told me how he was a scrawny little kid who always picked fights and Bucky would get him out of them. His smile disappeared though when he started to talk about himself after the serum and I wondered why, but I stopped when he told me the his best friend had passed. He then went into description of him ending Hydra and crashed the plane while talking to a girl named Peggy.
"Well that's my story." He says as his eyes begin to water.
"Steve I'm sorry." I say but he just gets up and places the dishes in the sink, he then walks out the door to his part of the cabin and closes.
