The music in the small concert club pulsed and thudded so loud I could taste the throb of the bassline and thud of the bass drum right at the back of my tongue. My friend's band, Impulse Control, played their set to perfection, as I snapped pictures for their website. I used to be in the band, but once I got into university, I had to choose between my passions. I opted for the safer one. Unlike everyone's perception of me, I was like that—safe.
Suddenly, without warning the music stopped and Lizzy, my best friend if there ever was such a thing, gaped in the direction of the bar. I turned to look, but couldn't see anything through the press of bodies. Doubling up my Nikon's strap on my forearm, I walked around the small stage to the stairs that lead to the stage. Before I could squint against the lights to see who was in the back, the crowd erupted.
"Noah, I love you!" Someone near me shouted, followed by numerous other squeals and declarations of love.
"Holy shit!" Lizzy purred into the mic, "I think we have some real bonified rockstars in the Cove tonight. Ladies and gentlemen! Behold, Sixes and Sevens!" She waved and cackled. Ever the show woman Lizzy, shook her shoulders and bit and said something to her bandmates behind her before their fan favorite 'Look at me!' started as the lighting continued to shift colors on stage and smoke filled the stage from the fog machine.
I couldn't help but sneak a peek through the viewfinder at Noah Silas—my fantasy man. I'd had a crush on him since I heard their music when I was fourteen—seven years before. Most girls put pictures of pop stars on their walls, but not me. I'd never gotten to meet him in person, but I'd seen him in concert too many times to count. Being so close to him seemed beyond impossible. Shaking my head, I turned back to Impulse Control and went back to snapping pictures like I always did, but keeping my attention on them and not on Noah tested all of my self-control.
When the song ended, Lizzy licked her lips and giggled again, the sound utterly perfect and playful, matching her cotton candy pastel pink hair perfectly. Her blue eyes sparkled in the lights, and she crooned a few lines from one of Sixes and Seven's hits they covered on occasion—at my request usually.
"I think we should get Noah to come up and sing with me. What do you guys think?" As soon as she finished the crowd erupted in shouts, and my hands started shaking as beyond the lights, I watched that tall figure stand and make their way toward the stage. Clutching my camera to my chest, I tried to breathe, but it was hard as Noah stood about three feet from me. He was so tall. I didn't expect him to be so tall. There were also lines by his eyes telling of his thirty-six years, but somehow they brought more attention to his killer hazel eyes which seemed more green than anything else in person.
No one had features as sharp as Noah's, not only did he have the whole high angular cheekbones and perfect chiseled jaw, but he had the best mouth. His lips were small, with a delicious pout that begged to be kissed. However, the way he looked at people...damn. Something about the way he squinted just a little into the crowd made me bite my lip. He had this natural smolder-y stare; I didn't even care that he and my friend were singing about being friends with benefits, I was captivated by the sum of him.
As I continued to snap my pictures I secretly wished he didn't look at me. The last thing I needed was to get caught in the full force of that gaze, knowing me, I'd probably drop my camera and break the damn thing. As much as I wanted him, and make no mistake I did, I knew I wouldn't know what to do with him if I did get him.
Then it happened, and my whole world crashed down around my ears as those sexy hazel eyes turned to me and he continued to croon out those sharp tones. I couldn't think, I couldn't breathe, I swear to fuck my heart didn't even beat. Noah-fuckin-Silas looked at me. My skin tingled, and things low inside me tightened. It was like every word that came out of him was just for me as my lips slowly parted and I was caught in his thrall like he was a vampire and I was his all too willing victim. He winked at me, sending my heart right into my throat before he turned his attention elsewhere, leaving me to shake the cobwebs from my brain. I made sure to get a few more snaps before he went back to sit down. I'd never heard the Cove so loud; the noise was more deafening than normal.
