Samuel takes me down far below the manor, he's been smart enough to tie my hands together first, but dumb enough tie them in front of me instead of behind. All I need to do is wait for the opportune moment to choke the idiot unconscious and make my escape. The only problem is the manor is busy. A pretty even mix of vampires and humans stroll through the halls, although none of them so much as glance in our direction as Samuel tugs me onward.
We've gone below ground level and the only light is provided by wall mounted candles, casting a dim orange glow on our surroundings. I guess it's true that vampires eyes are more sensitive to light. I've heard rumor of it before but it's hard to tell in Lavort which whispers have any truth behind them. Samuel stops so abruptly I almost topple us both over, he has turned to face a plain door marked MEDICAL. I wonder if now is my moment and quickly survey the hallway, at first glance I think it's finally empty and edge close to Samuel's back, then I notice movement at the end of the hall.
A pair of dark eyes stare back at me, for a moment I think it's Julian, come to gloat over his prize but then Samuel is tugging me through the door and with my last glance I decide it's not Julian after all. This guy's hair is black and his skin several shades paler, and then he's gone and I'm standing in a huge white room. Bright light bounces off of metal equipment, stabbing into my eyes as they struggle to adjust.
"What is this place?" I ask. Watching warily as humans in white jackets scurry past with clipboards. Samuel doesn't answer. The room is far more clinical than the blood donation center. More clinical than anything I've ever seen, every surface spotless and gleaming. One of the humans spots us milling and hurry's over.
"Check up, or first dose administration?" He squawks at Samuel, ignoring me completely.
"First dose." Samuel says. The man simply nods and then turns to usher us both over to a metal bed with wheels. Samuel tries to push me onto it, and I move to brace myself. Eyeing him smugly. I just about have the height advantage over him and I grin at him as he realizes I'm stronger too. The man in the white jacket tuts impatiently, his shrew like face bunching up, wrinkling the skin around his eyes.
"We need you to lie on the bed Miss, it's much easier to administer the medication if you're lying still." He mutters, pulling a large vial out of his pocket, the liquid inside is tinged pink and as his hand darts back into his pocket I shake my head.
"What medication? I'm not sick, I don't need meds." I say, attempting to back away from him as he removes a horrifyingly large syringe from his pocket.
"This is a necessary part of being a Chosen, you must comply."
I shake my head again. "Comply my ass! What's in it?" My eyes flicker between Samuel, the exit, and the man who's now using the syringe to draw up the pinkish fluid in the vial. He ignores my outburst, his face still pinched and irritated, he shuffles closer, brandishing the syringe. Samuel tightens his grip on my bound wrists.
"Nope, you're not coming near me with that, don't even think about it!" I yank myself out of Samuel's grasp, sending the metal bed flying backwards with a loud clatter. Taking advantage of their surprise I dart past them towards the door. Before I can reach it, it swings open and a tall man with hair as inky black as my own steps in, closing it swiftly behind him.
For a moment I just stare at him. Unable to move, unable to think. I can hear footsteps approaching me from behind, and guess that Samuel and the man with the syringe have caught up with me. The newcomer surveys the room with dark calculating eyes, his narrow face slightly too angular to be attractive, his skin sickly pale. Vampire.
"What's going on in here?" He demands.
"I'm trying to administer first-dose, but this Chosen is being un-cooperative." A shaky voice calls from just behind me.
