Chapter 22

*Harper POV*
I wake up the next morning and go downstairs. I get down there and everyone is awake and hanging out.
"Good Morning Harper" Jewel says
"Good morning" I say
I go and sit in the couch next to my brother and Leilani. I look around and everyone is sitting with their significant other but me.
"I'm gonna go for a walk. How far is the beach from here" I ask
"About a ten minute walk" Leilani says
"Ok" I say
I get up and head outside. I start walking along the road and before I know it I see sand in the distance. Once I reach the sand I find an area to sit down. As I do my phone buzzes. I look and see that Jordan is trying to FaceTime me. I answer and his face pops up on the screen.
H-Hey
J-Hey. How is Hawaii
H-it's Good. I miss you though. Everyone has their significant other here but me.
J-about that
H-what
J-we need to break up
H-w why
J-I met someone else
H-wait so you're cheating on me
J-no. I haven't actually gone on any dates with her. I told her I needed to break up with you first
H-who is she
J-my best friend from middle school
H-ok
I hangup and toss my phone a few feet in front of me.
"Hey you ok" I hear
I look up and see this guy coming towards me.
"Yes" I say
He looks at me like he knows I'm lying.
"Ok maybe I'm not ok" I say
"What's wrong" he asks
"I don't even know who you are" I say
"My name is Kekoa" he says
"My name's Harper" I say
"Well Harper I know you are not from around here because if you were you wouldn't throw your phone into the sand" he says picking my phone up
"I'm not. I'm from Tennessee" I say
"So what brings you here" he asks
"Um my best friends Aunt and Uncle died yesterday and so we came for the funeral and to support him" I say
"Ah I see well right now it looks like you're the one who needs a friend. Are you hungry" he asks
"I guess. Why" I ask
"I know a place that sells the best shrimp on the island" he says
"It's only 10:30" I say
"Shrimp is great at anytime of day" he says
"Alright I guess" I say
He helps me up and we start walking making small talk. Eventually we get to this place with a food truck and it is crowded.
"It's only 10:35. Why is it so crowded" I ask
"Like I said shrimp is good at anytime" he says
"Ok" I say
We get up to the front of the line and Kekoa does this handshake type thing with the guy.
"Hey brotha who is this" the guy asks
"Kamekona this is Harper. Harper this is Kamekona. He owns this truck and one or two others" Kekoa says
(Kamekona is a Hawaii five o character. They will be in the book some but only when they book is taking place in Hawaii)
"Hello Kamekona" I say
"Aloha Sista" He says
"Kamekona can you get me 2 surprise baskets please" Kekoa says
"Of course." He says
We go and sit down and Kekoa looks at me.
"What" I ask
"So what had you sad this morning" he asks
"Um my boyfriend broke up with me. He basically cheated on me without cheating on me" I say
"I'm sorry to hear that" he says
"It's okay. To make it even better though is that everyone that I'm here with has someone but me. My "boyfriend" wasn't able to come and now I no longer even have a boyfriend. My brother is gonna ask about him and I don't really want to talk to him about it" I say
"That's terrible. You know what do you have anything to do today" he asks
"I don't think so" I say
"I'll show you around the island" he says
Just as I go to thank him Kamekona shows up with our food. I go to grab some money but he stops me.
"It's on the house sista. You look sad and shrimp makes everything betta" he says
I thank him and so does Kekoa. We start eating and as we're eating a few people walk over to us. Kekoa stands up and greets them then they all sit down.
"Who's this Koa? You got yourself a girl and you don't think to tell us." The one guy asks
"No I did not get myself a girl. This is Harper. She is from Tennessee. I'm showing her around the island and being friends with her because she needs one right now and for the rest of her life" Kekoa says
"Ah I see" the guy says
"Excuse my partner for being so nosy. My name is Steve McGarrett. I run a police task force here. Welcome to Hawaii" the tall guy says
"My name is Danny Williams and yes welcome to the island and no I am not from here. I'm from New Jersey" the short one who was nosy says
"I could tell you weren't from here. It was either New York or New Jersey" I say
"You're smart and sassy. I like you" Steve says
"Thank you" I smile
"So what did you boys need" Kekoa asks
"Well we were just going to go surfing later on and wanted to see if you wanted to join but since you're busy we'll just move along" Steve says
"I've always wanted to surf"I say
"Well then it's your lucky day" Danny says
"Well join you guys. Here at 2:30" Kekoa says
"That works. You kids stay safe now" Steve says
They get up and walk away.
"How do you know those two" I ask
"Um well I was a troublesome kid and Steve sort of became my mentor" he says
"Wow" I say
We finish the rest of our food in silence then throw our trash out. As we do that my phone rings and I answer.
H-hello
S-sis where are you
H-I'm at the beach
S-ok. How long are you going to be there for
H-I'm actually leaving now but I'm getting a tour of some of the island from a friend that I met. I'll be back by dinner at 7.
S-okay. Be safe
H-I will
I hang up and put my phone in my pocket.
"Who was that" Kekoa asks
"My brother. He was just wondering where I was at and when I was getting home" I say
"You aren't going to tell him what happened" he asks
"I don't tell him a lot of things" I say
"He's your brother. He cares about you and would want to know these things about you" he says
"How do you know" I ask
"I had an older brother. Our mom died when I was four. Our dad got into some things with some bad people and landed himself in jail for a few years. When he cane out he was different yet the same. When I was fifteen him and I got in an argument and I ran off. My dad didn't care but my brother didn't know that I ran off and thought my dad did something to me. Those two started yelling and then it started getting physical. My dad killed my brother and it was all my fault. I came home to find my brother dead and cops waiting to send me to a care home. That's when I started to do things and McGarrett took me in." He says
"Wow. I'm so sorry" I say
"It's the past. I don't focus on that part of my life anymore. Now how about I continue showing you around" he says
"Ok" I say
We continue on and after three hours we start working our way back to the beach.
"Do you need a swimsuit" Kekoa asks
"No I have one on under my clothes. I didn't know what my group of friends had planned" I say
"Ok well we're going to get you a rash guard just so you aren't rubbing up against the board" he says
We walk into a surf shop and go over to the clothing racks. I pick one out and we go to the check out. When we get up there the guy looks really nervous.
"How much" I ask
"Tw-twenty" he says
I go to pay for it but Kekoa beats me to it.
We walk out and then walk down the street some when Kekoa stops.
"I'm going to call Steve and tell him about the robbery" he says
"Tell him no sirens" I say
He nods and pulls out his phone. He explains the situation to Steve then hangs up. Once he hangs up Kekoa and I keep watch on the store. I glance at the back and see someone with a gun running. I take off running after them Kekoa yelling at me to stop but I don't listen. I get to the guy and tackle him to the ground. I grab the gun and toss it.
"Good job. But next time let us handle it" Steve says while Danny deals with the guy
"Yeah ok. Let's go surfing" I say
Danny hands the guy over to the cops and we all go over to the vehicles.
"All did Danny finally give up riding with you" Kekoa asks
"No. We've been working on the restaurant so we went separately. Therefore we come separately" Danny says
"Ooh Danny can I drive your car" I ask
"How do you know the truck isn't mine" he asks
"Steve seems like a truck guy and honestly not many truck drivers in New Jersey. Especially when wearing a tie" I say
"You've been to New Jersey" Danny asks
"Once or twice" I say
"Come on let's go surfing" Kekoa whines
"Fine. I call shotgun in the truck" I say
"What no" Kekoa says
"Sorry man the lady gets it. It's called chivalry" Steve says
I laugh and hop in the truck. Steve gets in as well and then Danny and Kekoa get in the car. We get to the beach and get out. We find a spot to place our stuff. I put my towel down and take my shoes off. I also strip to just my bathing suit.
"Harper come with me we're going to grab you a surf board" Steve says
"Ok" I say
I follow him and we get to this little shack type thing.
"Hey brothah What can I get for you and this little lady" the guy asks
"We need a surfboard" Steve says
"Anything for Five-O" the guy says
Steve grabs a surf board and we head back to the other two.
"Do you have like the whole island in control or something" I ask
"No. I've just helped a lot of people get out of really dark places in their lives" he says
"That's really kind of you" I say
"Ohana is very important. A lot of these people are my Ohana. I would do anything for them. You are my Ohana now. I'd do anything for you. Before you leave I'll give you my number. I'm available 24/7. Even if you're in Tennessee and need someone to talk to" he says
"Thank you Steve. That means a lot" I say
We get back over to the other two and we all head towards the water. The boards get placed in the water then we get on them.
"Ok we're going to paddle out some then we'll start teaching" Kekoa says
I nod my head and we all paddle out. We get a little deeper in and then they start instructing. We surf for a few hours then go back to the sand.
"Thank you Steve and Kekoa for teaching me how to surf. And thanks Danny for making me not look too bad" I say laughing at the end
"You're welcome" two of the three say
We get to our stuff and I look at the time on my phone. It's 7:30.  I also have a couple missed calls and texts from everyone.
"Um guys I have to get home. It's 30 minutes past the time I was suppose to be there" I say
"Alright. I'll give you a ride" Steve says
"Ok. Kekoa thank you for the day. And Danny thank you for just hanging out" I say
Danny says your welcome and then Kekoa gives me a hug. He takes my phone and puts his number in it and I put mine in his.
"I also put Steve's in there" he says
"Ok. Thank you" I say
Steve and I get in the truck and I give him the address to the beach house.
"That's like two houses away from where I live" Steve says
"Cool" I say
We arrive to the house and I say thanks before I go in. I walk into the house and I'm bombarded with questions mostly from my twin.
"Spencer just leave me alone" I say
"You're late where were you" he asks
"I told you what I was doing and I'm sorry I'm late. Just leave me alone" I say
I run up the stairs and to the room I was sleeping in. I close the door and lock it. I lay on the bed, bury my head in the pillow, and cry. After a couple minutes there's a knock at the door.
"Go away" I say
"But it's your best friend" Joey says through the door
I sigh but get up and unlock the door. Joey opens it and pulls me into a hug.
"What happened" he asks
"Jordan broke up with me" I say
"I'm so sorry. Why did he do that" he asks
"Apparently he saw a friend from middle school. They like each other. He had to break up with me before they could go on any dates. He did it over FaceTime" I say
"I'm so sorry Harper. You don't have to come down at all tonight but you should still eat. Would you like dinner" he asks
"What is there" I ask
"We had pork chops and mashed potatoes" he says
"Ok" I say
"Spencer needs to know" he says
"Not yet. Once we get back I'll tell him" I say
"The same time you tell him that you became a Christian right" he asks
"Yeah I guess" I say
"Good. Now I'll be back up in a few with a plate of food and Jano. Then we'll watch a movie or two" he says
I just nod my head. He walks out and I go back to my bed. Ten minutes later Joey walks in with Jano and Chad walks in with the plate of food. He sets the plate down on the dresser and then just stands there.
"Yes Chad" I ask
"I think you need a hug" he says
"I think I'm alright" I say
"No you're not" he says
He grabs my hands and makes me sit up. I sigh and stand up. He pulls me into a hug. He let's go and walks out. I get back on the bed and Joe hands me Jano. He grabs my plate and we switch. He puts in a movie and sits down next to me still cradling Jano. For the next four hours we sit there watching two movies. Once they're over he leaves with Jano and I get ready for bed. Joey comes back in a few minutes later.
"Good night Harper. I'll see you tomorrow morning. The funeral is at ten so you'll probably want to wake up at 8" he says
"Ok. Good night Joey. Thank you" I say
"You're welcome" he says
He walks out and I turn the light off. I get in bed and drift off to sleep.
