~prologue~
there was only one star in the dark sky, an eery yet beautiful sight to see. he couldn't tear his eyes away from it as he sat on the lone sidewalk, one leg crossed over the other in a comfortable position that he had been in for a while. the street lamps were the only other lights, sending streams of yellow light down the road of the large neighborhood he had decided to find someone.
he didn't know who; maybe it could be a child who wasn't even supposed to be awake at these midnight hours. or it could be a girl who stayed up all night on her phone, or a woman who wanted nothing to do with the teenage boy.
he didn't mind. he just needed a friend.
he had dropped out of his miserable high school junior year, when all of the homework and all the taunting became too much for him. daytime was when he slept, or stayed at home and watched old movies.
but night, night was a time where he roamed the streets, by himself and enjoying the silence. his pale blue eyes were the only thing you could see if it was dark enough, just how he liked it.
his mum didn't know that he did this, in fact she was homeschooling him and she thought he was a perfect student. he was on the shorter side, with scruffy brown hair and a bright smile. he only wore toms and vans, and they were now worn down to the point where he needed new ones. he dressed in black and white, the only color was his socks and sometimes a logo on his shirt.
and here he was, out at a time of night where there were only a few stray cars and there was a slight breeze in the air, and he loved it. but he felt as if he needed someone by his side, and he didn't know who. so here he was, a handful of rocks clutched between his fingers, a determined look on his face, and his small feet dragging him through the neighborhood full of huge houses.
he stopped in front of a light blue house with white trimming, and it had bright flowers in the landscaping. there were about six windows in the front, and the one that stuck out the most was the one with black curtains completing shutting out the inside. the rest of the windows revealed dark rooms that were hard to see into. so he took a few quiet steps, his feet pushing into the soft green grass that still hadn't wilted in the summer sun this year, and he found himself standing below the window.
it looked to be on the second floor, a small window that was a bit smeary, and it looked dull compared to the rest of the big house. louis shook the rocks in his hands, listening to the rough noise of them rubbing together. he had collected them from someone's pebble landscaping, they were a dark blue color, almost black.
and finally, after taking a few deep breaths and letting out a nervous chuckle, the boy threw one of the pebbles up into the air, listening to the loud click as it hit the window.
it wasn't even a second later when a light snapped on, cascading white brightness onto the lawn where the boy was standing and making him jump.
he waited nervously, tugging his bottom lip between his teeth before releasing it. he could hear rustling inside the house, although the rooms around it stayed silent and dark.
finally, the window was pulled open, revealing another boy.
his hair was disheveled and curly, a mess upon his head. his eyes glowed a vibrant shade of green, and he was dressed in a pair of pajamas with little tiny sheep all over them. his eyebrows were pulled together with confusion, his pink rosy lips in a straight line. the shorter boy couldn't help but notice how tired he looked, how flustered he seemed.
"hi, pebbles, 'm louis," the boy grinned.
