四: Calm

"It's always calmest before the storm." That's what Taeyong was always told growing up, what he always thought of when things finally seemed to be going okay.

"It's always the darkest right before the sun rises." Again, more metaphors and idioms that Taeyong never quite understood.

Currently, he was sitting on the couch with his head resting on his grandma's shoulder, a fresh cup of coffee in his hands as she continued to knit.

They were watching some American show from the 1960s which Taeyong could hardly follow along with. It was also a sitcom, and Taeyong's grandma seemed to enjoy it a lot.

They'd been in the same position for the last hour and a half, and Taeyong was at peace like this. He didn't feel all jittery, probably due to this being his third cup of coffee, but he liked to think it was because he was with his grandma, and away from everyone else.

He wished every day could be like this one, that every day would just float by in front of the tv cuddled up to someone who made him feel safe and sound.

But he knew it couldn't, because life didn't work that way. Life was always about moving forward and being the best of the best, and there was hardly ever time for moments like these.

He'd witnessed it first hand in his own family. His mom was hardly ever home, but she was happiest when she was. His dad was always cooped up in his studio, but was so happy when Taeyong had showed an interest in it. He craved more moments like the ones he used to have.

There was something about being in the presence of something you loved, that was just calming. His mom had always told him to follow the path of happiness because she'd followed one of hard work. He saw what hard work did, versus what doing what you loved did, and he found no difference.

Either way it worked you to the bone, and sometimes the only thing that ever was different, was that doing what you loved made even the people around you happy at times.

But he pushed those thoughts away as he focused back on the show on the tv, his coffee now cold as his grandma finished knitting a small scarf.

Because even if his future was going to be hectic and full of struggles, for today it was calm.

And that's all he needed.
