Monday Morning.
Woke up at 5:18 am.
Brushed my teeth.
Took a shower.
5:45 am.
Began to read.
Finished at 6:45 am.
Left for school at 6:55 am.
Arrived at 7:10 am.
Everything went according to schedule.
That was until I was called to the principal's office in 1st hour.
My palms became sweaty and my face became pale. It was rare for me to get into trouble, but when that time comes, I literally begin to feel sick. I thought back to anything I could've done wrong this week. Maybe it was because I ate that mint in Homeroom last week. Or maybe the time I accidentally threw someone else's juice away in the garbage because I mistaked it for mine.
Whatever it may be, I was determined to come up with a explanation for it.
As I approached the office door I quickly adjusted my jeans and ruffled my white t-shirt. I tightened my low pony tail and slowly opened the door knob.
"Good morning Daisy!" Mrs. Gilbert greeted me with a warm smile and stiff handshake.
"Hello, Mrs. Gilbert. May I ask what I have been called up here for?" My voice was shaky, but I tried my best to sound confident.
She began with a low sigh "Ah yes. Well I'm sure you've seen an unfamiliar student around campus lately, correct?"
I nodded impatiently, waiting to hear what she had to say next.
"And I'm sure you've heard of the horrible car accident that happened yesterday over on Harper Street?"
This time I nodded slowly. Attempting to understand where she was going with our conversation.
"Well," she began " unfortunately that student, Matthew Zingermann, was involved in that car crash."
My face went blank. I hardly knew this individual but I instantly felt a sharp pain in my stomach of guilt. The very few times that I have encountered with him, I was awfully rude and harsh. But I am sure I'm not the only one feeling guilty.
"That's terrible." was all I could muster up .
Mrs. Gilbert showed a sympathetic smile. "The good news is that he alive ."
She paused for a good 30 seconds. As if giving him a moment of silence.
"The bad news is that he will have to be in a wheelchair for the remainder of the school year."
I was instantly filled with many emotions, unable to grasp on just one.
"That is truly awful news , but with all do respect , ma'am, I am still curious as to why I am here."
Her smile grew slightly bigger. "Of course. Well I was wondering if you would mind you know, helping him around the campus, maybe even helping him get home, I'm pretty sure he lives close to you as well ."
She grinned from ear to ear. She knew I was going to say yes.
'No no I don't want this responsibility , sorry find someone else.'
"Absolutely, Mrs . Gilbert, I'd love to help." I lied . Of course I would want to help someone but I wasn't exactly thrilled.
She clapped loudly and said, "Excellent! I really appreciate it and I'm sure his family would too. "
From what I recall I thought his parents died . Maybe the people in the car weren't his parents.
"When will he be coming back?" I asked curiously to make sure I knew when to be ready.
Mrs Gilbert smirked slightly. "He will be back at school this Wednesday. Its a little too soon in my opinion but he's determined to come back to school."
I gently slumped back into my seat. I didn't want to make it too exaggerated because obviously that would rude.
"I hope you don't mind coming to school a little early on Wednesday?"
"Not at all." I wasn't really too thrilled to be doing this but it might help earn some credits .
"Perfect! And don't worry all his classes were adjusted closer to yours . Also, you will receive a late pass everyday between classes. I know you won't misuse it." This time she reached over and gave me a gentle hug.
"I really appreciate it Daisy."
"No problem." It was a teeny tiny problem but it wasn't the end of the world.
"Alrighty. Well, he'll be waiting for you over by the entrance of the band room." Mrs Gilbert opened the door for me and let me out.
Once she closed the door and I was a few feet away. I sighed. Not knowing what to sigh for.
