''Mrs Simons, Mr Martin called and said his house is being searched without a warrant'' Tim storms into my office.
Tim is my assistant and he is effecient, he is taking himself to law school and uses his time as my assistant to learn from me and anyone else in the firm. He has a beautiful daughter Simone and a handsome son Simon, they are fraternal twins and I love them like my own children.
I have been an associate in this law firm for 5 years now, although I have been practicing law way longer because the firm belongs to my mother and I have always been involved even before graduating.
"Pass the cell phone to me" I hurriedly respond.
"This is Christall Simons from Simons & Associates, now please tell me on what grounds are you in my client's premises?"
"Ma'am we received an anonymous tip that there were unregistered firearms in this house" the officer says.
"Step out of the house and wait in front until I get there, tell your colleagues to stop what they are doing and step out." this is just what I needed this morning. Tom Martin is a famous football player and is going through a public divorce, his wife Melissa is destroying his image so now it's a game of cat and mouse with those two so I have to keep intervening.
...
I get to the house and Tom is in handcuffs.
"Officer I thought I told you to step out of the house until I arrive. Now would you explain to me why my client is in handcuffs?" I am infuriating at this moment.
"Ma'am your client is under arrest."
"For what?"
"Possession of illegal weapons and drugs, you will have to speak to him at the precinct"
"Show me the search warrant and the arrest warrant, if you don't have them uncuff him right now before a lawsuit comes to each and every one of you in these premises. I will take my client to the precinct without handcuffs myself and take a statement, now as for all of you here you better hope nothing in this house is damaged or missing. I said take off these handcuffs now."
"Tom get in my car let's go"
My mother taught me to never assume innocence of our clients, the best way is to ask first and then work out the situation.
"Tom I am going to ask you this once, are those things they found in your house yours or not"
"Christall do you really have to ask me this now?"
"Yes Tom, you know my rules. Tell me everything and I will try my best to defend you damnit" I shout at him angrily
"The drugs were mine but not the guns, you know very well I hate guns, my dad was murdered in front of my mom and I so ever since that night I have never touched a gun again."
"Now are you sure this is not Melissa who did this? But you told me you changed the keys to the house so how could she have done this? "
...
"Detective, what charges are you charging my client?" I know very well the charges but I want her to read them out to me.
"Possession of illegal weapons and drugs"
"I asked the arresting officer to show me the search and arrest warrant, because they failed to produce both of those documents I am taking my client out of this precinct and I suggest you avoid stopping me because I might sue your station for failure to follow proper arrest protocol. If your employees don't know the protocol then I will get a court order for everyone in this station including you detective to revise it"
"I am sorry Mrs Simons for the failure to follow protocol but illegal guns were found in Mr Martin's home and for now we have to detain him" the detective says.
"Not without the arrest warrant, now as for Mr Martin he will be in my office the whole day so when you finally get that warrant you can come arrest him. Tom let us go."
...
While in the car I contact the security company in charge of Tom's security services and they couldn't send me the video footages from the last 5 days so I opted to go myself to demand them. They had to produce them because of my experience with these kinds of cases I know how to handle them.
Now in my office our investigator Zuri searches for anything to stop this arrest because I cannot have my star client in prison because he has a game tomorrow, he was actually leaving for the airport when they barged into his house.
...
"Mr Martin you are under arrest, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be used in the court of law" that detective says with a smug on her face and I remain emotionless because I know it will not be long until I get him out."
2 hours later.
"I have a court order to release Mr Tom Martin, as you can see detective this document clearly says the weapons in Mr Martin's were planted by his housekeeper and she is getting arrested now as we speak. Release him now, and you better hope he does not miss his game tomorrow or you will have to pay for damages."
Tom was released and immediately rushed to the airport to catch the first flight out to Los Angeles for his big game tomorrow.
Back in my office, it is lunch time and I am expecting mother to come in any moment with our food, we always eat together in my office.
"I heard about Tom Martin and what happened, why didn't you ask for help?" my mom walks in with the food.
"Mrs Valerie Simons you know I like solving my cases on my own and besides I do not want our colleagues to think I only win cases because my mom is the owner of the firm, now what are we eating today?"
"Chicken and salad"
"Yay, I am starving I did not have breakfast this morning and immediately when I got to work I was hands on so my darling mother let us eat."
"Honey I am so proud of you, you inherited my drive and my charm. Oh before I forget, Christina and Kristen are coming for Thanksgiving"
Oh no, my sisters are coming? Those two always brag about how their lives are so perfect and how they are happy in their careers and they make fun of me for choosing law to follow our mother's footsteps.
Christina is a research scientist at a huge laboratory and Kristen is a doctor.
Handling my sisters is a lot more difficult than being in a courtroom. In fact, I'd rather be in a courtroom the whole day than have to spend time with them.
