"Hi" I say to the cutest boy I've ever seen. He has green eyes with tangy orange hair. I smile using my other hand to pull my stray hair behind my ear. "Uh-- d' oh hi!" he says as if just out of a trance. I look him in the eye and realize something "Ummm aren't you," I snap my fingers trying to remember his name. "Oh yeah! Derin?" I guess. My mind is full of names. I know it starts with a 'D'. He laughs. I notice his cute smile.
"It-it's Derek," ugh stupid, stupid, stupid.
"Stupid, stupid."
"What?" he questions.
"Did I say that out loud? Oops. I meant that I'm stupid for not knowing your name and all." I say talking extremely fast.
"It's ok, I actually don't remember your name," he says looking nervous.
"Lyla, Lyla Garmen," I say satisfied. I feel so much better about myself. We both realize each other awkwardly staring at each other. I blush and look down at the basketball.
"Um, here's your ball," I say and glance up at him. He's doing his cute smile at me again.
"Yeah thanks," He grabs the ball and stands up.
"Well I'll see you at school, I guess." I grab my arm behind my back and smile at him. He stares at me with dreamy eyes.
"Yeah." He stands there staring at me and not moving. I shift from foot to foot. This is awkward.
"Oh hey, um, I'm sorry my ball landed in your yard." He says and smiles a little. "That was a mistake."
"Oh I don't think it was a mistake," I say and look at him. He gives me a confused look. Uh oh. I realize what I just said and it sounds weird. What was I thinking?
"What?" He asks and cocks his head a little.
"I mean, um, I'm uh, I'm glad the mistake happened. I mean! Wait, ignore that. I um, oh no," I put my head in my hands and sigh. I sound so ridiculous. What is wrong with me?
"Hey," he says and pulls my hands away from my face. "I know what you mean and uh, I'm glad it happened too." He smiles and we sit there staring and smiling at each other for what seems like hours. He suddenly snaps out of it and clasps his hands together.
"Well, I uh, I better get going," he says and backs up a little.
"Yeah see you," I say and brush my hair behind my ear again.
"See you," He says and gives me one final smiles and then walks away. I watch him until he closes the door to his house. Once he is gone I slump against the wall of my house and sigh. That went well. Sort of. I take one final glance at the house to see his head inside the window, peeking out through the curtains. I smile at him and he immediately closes the curtains once he sees me looking at him. I sigh once more and turn around, open the door, and walk inside my house.
