Welcome to this book! Read on if you dare (:
Contextualization: Takes place after the events of episode two, suffer the children. However, the Clementine and Louis piano scene never occurred.
=========================
Waking up with a yawn, Clementine opened her eyes to the ceiling of her and AJ's room at the school. She stood groggily, lighting the candle on her desk because it was too early for the sun.
The room was deathly quiet and empty. Only a few piles of clothing sat in the corners, a couple of AJ's drawings adorning the walls. The windows were barred up with wooden planks because AJ had thrown a rock at the window only days before, filled with untamed, raw anger about Lily and Abel's attack on the school.
She didn't blame him. The aftermath had been absolutely devastating, only a fraction of the kids still remaining, even less unscathed. Violet, Omar and Aasim were taken in what seemed like only a matter of seconds. Mitch had been mercilessly killed- left with only gashes of hatred carved into his nimble neck. And all that was left were only a couple of hopeless survivors, more specifically without a rescue plan.
Clementine was surprised with how well she had slept that night, considering the panic that swept throughout the inhabitants of the school. After all, how would they ever know if Lilly would return, especially with more reinforcements?
They had whispered of leaving the school, but it was hardly an option. It would be hard to stay safe with so many of them in one group. But Clementine constantly reminded herself- was it any better than sitting here like wounded dogs, waiting for their death to approach? Helpless and afraid of the unknown?
Nevertheless, life at the school continued. Though devastated, the remaining inhabitants did their jobs well, and managed to keep their spirits up. Clementine was glad they had adapted and kept their wits about them even after all that had happened.
The only person she was truly worried about was AJ. Sure, he was no stranger to the horrifying events of the apocalypse, but for the longest time Clementine had been his only companion, much less the only person he really cared about. And following the last couple of weeks he had made a lot of friends at the school. Many of which.. had recently been captured or killed.
Foreign to such attachment, AJ was the most affected of them all. He had constantly blamed himself for what had unfolded, much like Clementine. But for a five year old.. this was quite unsettling.
Running her hands through her tangled hair, she tied it up before staring across the room. She quickly noticed AJ's bed was empty; her heart raced in indescribable fear.
Shoving the door to her room open and leaving her hat behind, she scaled the hallways, eyes darting in all different directions. It was possible he had probably just ran off, considering his rebellious nature, but her motherly instinct could not be so easily extinguished.
Nearing the piano room, she heard music erupting softly from it. Stopping in her place, the relaxing tune only calmed her momentarily.
Approaching the door slowly, she heard a familiar laugh on the other side. AJ's.
An immediate wave of relief flooded over her body. She couldn't help how much she worried about him, after all. She had suffered a lot of losses over the past couple of years, but she wouldn't be able to handle losing Alvin Junior. She'd taken care of him, and successfully, since he was a newborn. He was all she had. She was all he had.
Creaking the door open only slightly, AJ was not alerted and instead kept his attention focused on the piano. He was sitting in someone's lap, the one who was playing, undoubtably Louis.
