Chapter 1
"Hey, Daine. Daiinnneeee. It's time to get up." Nate's voice rang in the air.
"Why? I'm sleeping. Go away." I moaned drowsily. I was tired, but that wouldn't stop Nate.
"Get up! We're here. You should really look at the place. It's HUGE."
Still groggy, I sat up and looked out the car window, amazed. It was bigger than it had been pictured in the pamphlet. A huge front garden greeted us, with the greenest lawn you could ever imagine. Tons of trees, brimming with life, and flowers of all different colours everywhere. Hedges rimmed the pathways, and in the centre of it all was a fountain, a naked woman standing with a pot in her arms, draped in some kind of ancient Greek-like robe. And behind her stood a male figure, helping her to support the pot. My eyes then drifted behind the garden to the actual building. Buildings I should say. In the centre was what would most likely be the main building, with its white double doors, surrounded by a few windows. All of it was white against the dark brown of the building's bricks. Part of the building jutted out just above the door frame, to provide shade to the guests, with stone columns coming from two of the corners. The columns resembled trees, with twining branches at the top, slowly changing to just the stump at the bottom and molding into the steps which lead to the building.
On either side of this building were two other structures, only these ones were much larger. Actually the one on the right was the largest of the three buildings. Both buildings looked the exact same as the centre edifice, only the one on the left had dark red windows and doors, while the right one had dark green. Also, both of them didn't have the nice columns or the jutting out part, only steps.
Overall, it looked spectacular. More than I had expected for a boarding school. That's right, boarding school. I, Veralidaine Taylor, sixteen years old, am officially a boarder at the Yvers Boarding School.
I should probably start at the beginning. It was during the summer holidays, only a little while ago, when my parents sat both Nate and I down to have a 'talk'. Nate, or Nathanial, is my brother. Half brother. We share the same father, but different mothers. Nate's mum died during childbirth, and some time later in the next year my father remarried and had me. That's why we both have a similar shade of hair - Nate's black and mine an extremely dark brown. Although our eyes are completely different. He had the most beautiful green-grey eyes I'm jealous of, while I had almond shaped brown ones, which aren't quite are remarkable. Although I guess having a father who isn't Asian did gift me with big eyes, for my mother's were unfortunately small.
"What's up?" I asked, half giggling because I had just eaten a tub of ice cream and was on a sugar high. Nate just smiled like an idiot.
"Well, you know how your dad and I have been trying to get a promotion at work for a while now..."
"Yeah," I replied, still having no idea where this was headed.
"We finally got it."
"Congratulations!" Nate yelled.
I just smiled and gave them a hug, which they gladly returned. They didn't seem too happy about it though, which was odd. My parents have been working hard for over a year trying to get this promotion, so I knew how much it meant to them.
"Actually, what we really needed to tell you was that..."
"This job requires us to travel to different countries every few months," my dad finished off for her.
It shouldn't have been surprising, but I found that my mouth hung open like a cod fish.
"W-what?" stammered Nate. "Does this mean we're going to have to keep moving? I don't want to do that!"
