"Look, I know you're not happy about this Luna but we really can't help it. Look on the bright side, you'll get the whole 'American High School' experience!" Marissa Everdon said in an attempt to lift her daughter's spirits.
"I don't want to get the 'American High School' experience! I was just fine with the British one! Plus Forks stupid High won't have Amy or Megan or Lily or any of my friends." Luna argued, staring out of the window moodily.
The Everdon's were just your average family, living in East-Midland England. John Everdon had a steady job at a financial firm and Marissa was a nurse at the local hospital. James and Luna went to a grammar school (both being rather smart kids) and had average hobbies. Nothing was extraordinary about any of them at all. Nothing completely shocking had ever happened to them before, that was until..."We're moving to America." John announced as he took his shoes off at the door of their four bedroom semi-detached house.
"What did you say dear? The radio's quite loud in here." His wife called from the kitchen.
Letting out an exasperated sigh, the portly man made his way through the hallway.
"I said we're moving to America!"
Silence.
Shocked, Marissa turned off the radio and sank into a chair as the two teenagers (who had previously been having a war with the mops) both stared at him with their mouths open.
"We can't just move! I've already chosen my options, and I've got mock GCSE'S this year!" James was the first one to recover, leaping up in indignation.
"Yeah and I've only just settled into my new school! I can't leave all my friends behind Dad! What the hell!" Luna yelled as she rose from her chair too.
"John, where has this come from? This is absurd, we can't just pack up and move across the world." Marissa reasoned, shocked and confused at her husband's unexpected news.
"Look, it's a big thing I know," John raised his arms defensively, "but I've been offered a massive promotion, this could be huge for us. I would be deputy manager of the entire firm! Just think about that, it could mean millions of pounds a year!"
The room went silent as the three family members tried to process this influx of information.
"M-millions? This isn't a joke John? You do realise if we did move to America it would be a massive step, we'd have to take things very seriously."
"What the heck mum? You can't seriously be thinking about this!" Luna broke the almost hypnotic atmosphere in the room as she streaked out, slamming the door.
James merely glared at both of his parents before stalking out behind his sister. Both siblings wordlessly locked themselves in their rooms, dealing with the pain and anger that accompanied the news. Whilst the sound of fists meeting walls permeated James' bedroom, Luna silently wrapped herself in the faded blanket and stared at the ceiling as tears trickled slowly down her face."Look at the scenery kids. It's pretty amazing." John said, causing James to turn to the window.
"It's green." He stated bluntly.
"Well yes, but it's so beautiful! Just like living in the woods!" Marissa (determined to try and put a positive spin on at least one aspect of the conversation) chipped in.
"You know what also had really good scenery?" Luna asked, "Home did. So I don't get why we had to move to America where the weather is just as shit and my classmates will share one brain cell between them. We had enough money to get by at home anyway and this is just unnecessary and utterly ridiculous."
Marissa pinched the bridge of her nose at her daughter's constant voicing of her disapproval. Honestly, since she'd stepped on the plane the only thing the damn girl had done was sulk.
"I know you don't want this Luna but it's happening no matter what so you might aswell accept it! Now if you really-Oh my god JOHN!" The woman's scolding was cut short when suddenly, a large truck careened round the corner. It was heading straight for the family's car. And it wasn't slowing down.Things happened in slow motion as the large transportation vehicle collided with the front of the Everdon's Skoda Octavia. Then everything fast-forwarded to a gut-wrenching blur. Screams. The sharp snap as her mother's neck jerked back. The agony as her father's chair thrust onto her, crushing her legs. And blood. Blood everywhere - on the windows, on the seats, on her hands, her face, running in rivulets down her ivory skin. And blood trickling from the corner of her brother's mouth as a shard of glass from the windscreen was lodged in his neck. The sheer panic and horror she was feeling in that moment wholly overtook the pain as she scrambled to him. Her legs were completely stuck but she reached forward as far as she could to grip a clammy hand.
"James!" She screamed, her voice a strangled shriek.
"Luna." He whispered, "I don't want...to die. I'm...scared Luna...scared." He choked out, trying to breath through the crimson liquid that was rapidly filling his mouth. "Ben you've got to hang on, they'll be here soon, the doctors. They can fix you. Please James, just hang on." She was shaking now, the only thing keeping her on the verge of sanity being the fourteen-year old boy's hand weakly gripping hers.
"Love you Luna, don't...leave...m-" His final words were cut off by a gurgle and then James went still, his hand now limp. "James? James! James please! Luna shook him in desperation as his now-blank eyes stared ahead.
She was hysterical now, gripping his cooling body as her vision went black around the edges. She opened her mouth in a slightly insane scream before the pain became too much and she sunk into the comforting oblivion of blackness
