Pulling himself further into his warm coat as a gust of freezing wind engulfed him, Gavin Hodges rushed closer and closer to his house and slammed the door behind him. He sighed as warmth engulfed his cold body. He had just walked back from school, and the whole way, he was wondering why they still needed to attend school, if the world were freezing, being pulled into a black hole. They needed better winter coats.
He walked towards the kitchen, his backpack still over his back, and when he opened the door, his heart nearly stopped.
It was his neighbor, a girl his age, with long dark hair, and beautiful brown eyes. Her skin was surprisingly tan, even though it was at least -70°F outside. She was taller than him, which wasn't very surprising considering he wasn't much taller than 5 feet.
"Hi, Jess," he said quietly, and he hopes he wasn't blushing as he took his hood off his hood, and slid his backpack off his shoulder as he sat in a chair. "What's up?"
"Your mom told me to help you with your homework when you got here. She'll be home soon. She told me no romantic interaction with you. Like that would ever happen." Jess said, not knowing how much that last statement hurt Gavin, and he wished that he could just sit under the table and cry.
"Yeah. Right. That's ridiculous," he said, sadly pulling out his Algebra textbook. "So, I think that I need to get rid of the -2x, but how?"
She went on to explain it, and they worked through his homework, his heart sometimes skipping as his hand brushed against hers. Finally he was done, and they sat there awkwardly. "Are you ready for homecoming season?" she finally asked, it wasn't her asking him out. It was just a question.
"The chaos? No."
"Sorry. I really meant, so do you have a date?" This was also just a question, no matter how much he wished otherwise.
"No," he said. He wanted to ask her right then and there.
"I already have a boyfriend, but he hasn't asked me to the dance yet," she interrupted.
"Really?"
"I think he's cheating on me, and he's too concerned with someone else to care about me."
He couldn't have stopped what he did then. He leaned over and kissed her, and he couldn't believe he was doing it. She let out a noise of surprise, but she never pushed him away, and began kissing him back. Then he pulled himself away and rushed out the door, and stared at the ever shrinking sun. He heard the door open once again, and Jess walked over to him and held his hand in her own, placing her lips on his cheek as Gavin's mother walked by. She looked at them, and shouted, "What did I tell you two?" as she walked into the house.
"Why?" Jess asked.
"I wanted to kiss you before the end of the world."
