Kayleigh
"Oh, mom." I whispered in horror as she braids my hair into a bun. "You know I don't like my hair pulled up! People will see my ears!"
"Oh, honey! No one is going to worry about your ears tonight! They'll be too busy dancing and having a good time!" Mother reassured me.
I worn my pale blonde hair long for as long as I could remember. Since first grade, actually. It was the first time I had gotten ahold of scissors and being a hairstylists daughter I wanted to cut my hair! Well, aside from looking like a boy all throughout first grade everyone made fun of my ears.
Instead of them the being round and soft like everyone else, they had a point to the them, just enough to notice. That's all people needed, just enough to look different. Therefore making me a freak from then on. I hated school ever since. I had no friends except one. Bellamy thought my ears looked cool, she was a nerd. Always reading and daydreaming. I was jealous of her ability to daydream and block everyone out. She was a master of zoning out. Whereas, I couldn't. I was hyper-aware of everything around me. I couldn't get myself out of my head. Everywhere I turned, I felt eyes on my back. My named whispered into locker conversations as I walk by. I was painfully aware of my surroundings.
"Okay, honey! Now let's do your makeup!"
"Oh, mom, please no makeup!" I cried out, but she wouldn't take no for an answer.
"It's your prom! The only night in high school worth remembering!" She exclaimed as she pounded my face with powder. I rolled my eyes. I didn't want to go in the first place but Bellamy and my mother both ganged up on me until I said yes.
My mom, the stylist, she went all out. She got me a soft green fitted dress that draped over my feet. The horror as I took in the long slit in the side that parted all the way to my thigh. The only thing I got a say so in was my shoes. They were plain white wedges that you could barely see under the dress. At least I could walk in wedges.
As she finished I hear a loud knock on the door and then "KAYLEIGH I'M HERE!" As Bellamy climbs up the stairs. I look at my mother and smile. "How is it that I keep forgetting I told her where the spare key was hiding?"
"Remind me to change the location!" Mom laughs.
The door opens and Bellamy stands there in a dark red strapless fitted dress. In all of its ways it was similar to mine. The split down the side; but she filled hers out. Her curves filled out in the right spots; her dark skin matching the color to a tee. Her long dark brown voluminous hair molded into perfection. I wanted to punch her in the face.
"You look gorgeous as always, B!" I settled for an honest compliment.
"Are you kidding! Look at you! I have never seen you look this good! Honey, you're drop dead gorgeous!" As I open my mouth to scold her, she turned me to my full length mirror I stood there gaping. I did, in fact, look good. My mom not only made my eyes pop with the gorgeous make up but she added color to my skin. Though I was rails compared to Bellamy's curves I was tall. "Wow, mom! This is amazing!"
"I can't believe my baby girl is growing up!"
"Oh no, mom. Please not the tears!" I exclaimed. "You cry over everything!" I grab the tissue box and hand it to her. She sniffles and blows her nose.
"I can't help it!" She scolds, "you're my only child. I love you very much and I can't help but be happy and sad you're so close to growing up and leaving!"
"Mom! I'm not going to be that far from you! My college is literally an hour and a half away! I'm not going to leave you alone, trust me!" I pause and think. "Perhaps now you can get you a boyfriend! You'll need someone to take care of when I'm not here!" Bellamy and I snickered
"Oh, ha ha! I raised you alone and I don't need no man!" She snaps her finger.
"That's for sure, Ms. Grey! You're the most strongest independent woman I know!" Bellamy smiled and hugged my mom. "Okay, are we ready to go?" She looks at me. I sigh, "as ready as I'll ever be."
She squeals and grabs me by the arm and I mouth, 'I love you' to my mom.
On the way to the hotel we jam out to all our favorite songs. First singing "I want it that way" at the top of our lungs. Crossing the bridge we see a strange beacon of light strike from the sky. Mesmerized by it, neither one of us saw the dark figure in the middle of the road until it was too late. Bellamy and I scream, swerving off the road and into the forest.
