Chapter 2

Shells blast all around us as my team and I first get into the trenches. I look at my comrades, all deathly white in the face and trembling enough so that you could hear their gleaming new rifles vibrating against their belt buckles. I look at the utter squaller that we stand in and see something that will change my life forever. What I see, is a human face looking blankly at the sky, his face white as winter's, his outstretched arms buried by the wet mud. He seems to be drowning in the horrific mud, like he is trapped, getting sucked in. He looks young, twenty or so, and come to think of it, looks rather like me. I just wonder hauntingly if I would suffer the same fate as he did. And just as I wonder this, a shell crashes just in front of us, and before I know it, I am drowning in mud too.
