You see, Riley and I have been best friends since.. oh I don’t know, babies? We’ve been through everything, literally everything. We went to the same nursery, same school, same everything. We’re next door neighbors, so anytime I need something from Riley or any of the McDonough’s, I just open my window and throw a rock at Riley’s window, which is right across from mine. By any chance, he would open it and talk for hours. Once, we talked all night, until it was sunrise. Oops.
Right now, I’m at my second home, the McDonoughs. This is literally my second home, and I could do whatever I want in there. Mrs. McDonough, or should I say mommy Anne, treats me like the daughter she never had. My mom and her are like best friends since they went to the same high school and college, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Talk about real friendship.
Anyhoo, Riley invited me to come over and listen to his band. I have eavesdropped on their rehearsals a couple of times though, so it’s not a first. He thinks that I haven’t heard them or anything. I grinned at the memory.
*flashback*
“Hey Riley, wanna come over today?” I asked, leaning out off the window.
“I’m so sorry, I can’t. Connor’s band is rehearsing, they want me to sing with them!” He sounded so stoked, but me? No, I wasn’t. I thought he was rejecting me or replacing me. Riley was my only friend since none of the other girls thought I was a tomboy. I was 13 years old, so don’t judge!
“Yeah.. sure, it’s fine.” I disappointedly said.
“Are you sure?” he asked, concerned.
“Yeah, don’t worry!” I put on my best fake-happy voice.
“Thanks, Em! You’re the best!” Riley waved, and left me.
Curiosity got the better of me and I snuck out of home and leaned against their house. I could hear guitars and drums and Riley singing. They were singing a song I didn’t know, which was odd, since we had the same taste in music. It was the first time I heard Riley sing, and I didn’t know he had it in him! His husky and raspy voice, oh wow. Just, wow. I didn’t even—
“Em? Em?! EMILY?!” Riley interrupted.
“Uh, hi? What’s up?” I said, while returning back to the present time.
“I said, come to the basement with me,” Riley said, “what were you even thinking about?”
“Oh, nothing.” I can’t let him know that I’m snooping around.
“Are you sure? Because I had to repeat that quite a lot,” he said with a worried look on his face.
“Yep, don’t worry about it,” I grinned, and he just shook his head. “Why are we even going down there?”
“Well, I finally convinced Connor and the rest of the band to show you and let you hear the songs!” Riley said, proudly.
“Oh yay!” I said with fake enthusiasm.
We arrived downstairs and saw 3 other guys. I immediately recognized Connor.
“Hey Emmy-bear,” greeted Connor. I hated that name. He knew that. Ugh.
“Hi, Connie-poo!” I retorted back. His smile disappeared. I stuck my tongue with victory at him. Connor absolutely loathed that name. Riley laughed.
