I was helping Joan with the dishes while the guys were in the living room playing x-box. Of course. After the band, it was their life. Halo, Call of Duty, and Modern Warfare. I heard the guns and their yelps of triumph and loss. Such boyish things to do. The McDonough’s only have three controllers, usually for Connor, Riley, and Toby, so Riley didn’t play. Toby just went up to his room doing whatever he does.
“Emily, get me a soda!” Riley ordered.
“You have legs, Riley. And, that’s not nice,” Joan replied sternly, “You won’t get any girls like this.”
“Funny, mom,” Riley said. Surprisingly, he stood up and got a can of coke from the fridge. I gawked at him.
“What?” he asked at me.
“You.. you actually stood up.. and g-g-got a can..” I stuttered.
“What? I can be a gentleman at times!” he said, proudly. I snorted. Oh, Riley. I picked up a small plate from the sink to dry, but then Braiden came.
“Hi, Mrs. McDonough. Can I get some water please?” he asked politely. His voice startled me, and it made me drop the plate.
“Oh, my gosh, Joan, I’m so so so sorry!” I bent down to pick up the pieces, and Braiden tried to help, but Joan stopped us. Riley just stood there.
“Emily, it’s okay. You’re usually not this clumsy, from the 16 years I’ve known you. And, don’t pick up the pieces. You’ll cut yourself.” She said, calmly.
“I’m really, really, really sorry!” I apologized.
“It’s okay,” she reassured. “Go hang out with the boys!”
“Yeah.. I’m sorry again! Oh, and here’s a glass, Braiden. Water is in the fridge,” I said as I handed him a glass.
“Thanks!” he smiled. Our fingers touched, and I quickly pulled away. I began to blush furiously.
“You blush easily,” he noticed. I blushed even more, if that’s possible. Riley snickered. “It’s kind of cute,” he added. Oh, my god. He just called me cute. Am I dreaming?!
“T-th-thanks,” I said, quietly. He smiled. Oh god. Is he trying to kill me? Riley stared. As usual. When we made eye contact, he smirked. I glared at him. I escaped the kitchen from embarrassment, and went to the living room. I sat on the sofa criss-cross-apple-sauce and started playing temple run, then I noticed someone sat next to me, but I was too focused on temple running to care. I was about to beat my high score until I was interrupted by the person next to me.
“What’s your high score?” someone asked. This made me miss a turn. I WAS SO CLOSE TO BEATING MY SCORE. I turned my head, ready to beat up the person who interrupted my temple run, only to realize it was Braiden. I contained myself, and instead, I found myself blushing, again. Ah, why do I have to blush so easily?!
“Umm.. like 5 million something..” I stuttered.
“You’re close to beat it,” he noticed.
“Yeah..” I answered, “It kinda was your fault…”
“Sorry!”
“No, it’s okay!” I forgave him. I usually don’t, but it’s Braiden. How can I not? “At least you’re not Riley, who purposely shakes my iPhone yelling, ‘Earthquake!’”
“Oh yeah, I hate it when people do that!” he agreed. We continued to make conversation, but my heart sped up. At least I didn’t blush, I think..
*Riley’s P.O.V.*
I watched as Emily talked with Braiden. She clearly liked him. She blushed terribly every time they communicated, or whenever they touched. She blushed whenever he was in the room! I had no chance. Yes, you heard that right. I liked Emily since.. oh, I don’t even remember. But the thing is, she only thought I was her best friend, but no… I wanted to be more than friends, but she friend-zoned me a long time ago.
She also didn’t know that I wrote Three Words just for her. That’s why I chose that song to play for her, but as I am friend-zoned, she thought I wrote it for someone else. Of course.
Now, I’m losing her to Braiden. I’m losing her when I never had her in the first place.
Connor interrupted my thoughts when he said, “Okay, let’s play truth or dare!”
