"Come on" giggles David. He's anxious to get outside. "We haven't had a sunny day like this in ages. Quick while Mum's cleaning the lounge room."
The two young children crept out of the aging farm house; looking for something to do that they hadn't done a hundred times before. "Let's go to the sheep yards!" squeaks David's excited little sister Ann, "Uncle John brought the sheep in for shearing next week." "Alright," said David, "We'll go get the dogs on our way." He didn't want to be stuck with his little sister alone.
The children continued to creep along the gravel track, worn to dust by the hundreds of utes, tractors and trucks that had passed through over the years. The gravel turned to grass as they approached the dog kennels under the bright green pepper tree. Ann could already smell the new peppercorns in the air; it was so strong she could even taste their bitterness.
Uncontrollable barking issued from the Kelpie dogs mouths as the children came near their cage, ecstatic at the prospect of being free for the day. "Shut up!" yelled David, mimicking his father and Uncle. He returned to his normal voice, "You'll get us caught". "Just let them out and let's go!" moaned Ann, obviously eager to get to the sheep yards.
An ear piercing squeak of rubbing metal issued from the rusted cage as David opened the gate. Jet, the younger male, exploded from the cage and launched into his usual freedom run, soaking in the golden sun as his yellow highlights shone against his black coat. Jo, the older and more dignified female padded out of the cage straight to Ann for a warm hug and pat. "How's my old girl" Ann crooned. Jo was her favourite.
