A Choice Needs to be Made

I'm away on the beach. Four missed calls from Rainer and six from Jake. What do I do? Who do I choose? Rainer has been there for me ever since I got the part. And... and Jake. He made that script about us and everything. Oh boy! But then again. He's the one that left. Not me. And, he came back. In a couple minutes, I need to get to set. Where Rainer will be. And his mother and his... Alan. Or whatever he is. Father, I really don't care right now.
My alarm goes off to head back to set. I get my stuff and go. I drive to the studio only to see Adam.

"Oh hey Paige." He says strolling over to me with clipboard in hand as usual.

"Hey Adam. Have you seen Rainer anywhere?" I look over his shoulder to see nothing. Looking over the other one to see the exact thing.

"Is it him? Are you choosing him? I watched last night and I gotta say Paige, pretty romantic, what Jake did for ya. But I hear Rainer talk about you like he's in love , when you're not around if course."

"Of course he does. Is he anywhere to be seen?"

"Oh uh, yeah. In his trailer."

"Thanks Adam."

"Your welcome red. Go get him tiger." He gives me a wink followed by a smile. So weird.

I walk into my trailer to set myself and my bag down, get a water and an apple and head out. It's a nice and cool day today. I want to make the best of it. Alright here I go. Off to set.

I step down off my trailer steps and head right to the set. As soon as a turn around, there's Rainer. He looks at me and gives me that sexy full gullible smile and it makes my heart melt.

"Hey Paige."

"Hey Rain."

"How are-"

"Look, Rainer. Is it possible that we can skip the awkward hello's and an occasional how ya doin's and actually have a full honest uninterrupted conversation?" I say. Being a little brave at first, but then losing my confidence.

"Yeah. I'd like that. Say, my house on break?" He says.

"Yeah. That's cool." We walk to set together. And I can see that he's actually sober. He's doing better.

We walk inside and it's filled with Paparazzi. "Good you're both here." Nina says walking well really racing in heels, over to us.

"Yeah why?" Rainer says demeaning.

"We can't have you two on set together seen by people today. Last night was hectic. I don't know, you guys can go home and hang out or live a separate life. I don't care, you're just not working today." She says.

"Okay." Rainer and I say in unison and head out.

"Coffee?"

"Yeah."

We go to the bistro a block away. Almost away from all of the drama. But we are going there together. Rainer. And me. All of the drama and lights are on us.

"Paige, does this mean that you chose Rainer Devon? Are you guys still together, getting coffee?" A cameraman starts following us, then followed by thousands. We quickly run into the coffee place to get away from them. When we walk in, no one cares. They look at us but then go back to their business.

"Two coffees please." Rainer calls over to one of the waitresses.

"Sure thing."

"So......" there's a long pause in what I want to say but I can't find the words. He stares at me for a minute as soon as the waitress comes out with our coffee. He his back to a normal face. Says thank you and takes a sip. It's awkward. Rainer. I need to talk to you. SAY SOMETHING.

"So why, why are we here?"

"Rainer..."

"I know why. You want to tell me that it's me don't you? Because if you weren't asking me to come, you would be asking Jake for coffee to tell him that you want to talk and tell him that it's him. Am I right?" Thank you for asking the question that I need to answer.

   "Rainer. I um- I want to give you an answer but. I just can't think straight today."

   "I know Paige. And I'm sorry for pushing. But you know how much I want this. Us. Take your time." He grabs my hand, rubbing his thumb over it reassuring that everything is okay. Okay with Locked, okay with me, him, us. Once we finish our coffee, we head out and he takes me home. I close the door behind me and set my stuff in the counter. A sigh escapes and it's not me.

   "Hey....." it's Jake.

   "Hey. How are you?"

   "I'm okay. I guess. I'm trying to work on a new project. While being in Texas; real wake up call for me. Realized what I want in life."

   "And what do you want?"

   "You."

   "Jake. No."

   "Paige, why? Is it Rainer, is that who it is? Come on Townsen. Why?"

   "Jake that's not what I'm saying. But he's been there for me."

   "Oh really? Who has been there with you, being a friend for you since freshman year. And oh yeah. Jordan's premiere? Who wasn't there for you sober? Who knows you better? Me or him?"

   "Jake are freaking being serious right now? Who didn't want to talk about that kiss? Hmm? Oh and who wasn't there for me when things were going really good for me, didn't want to talk to me, took up nights with Alexis instead. Oh yeah, the biggest thing, YOU FREAKING MOVED OUT TO TEXAS BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO AFRAID OF CALIFORNIA. You're the biggest jerk ever." He moves in to kiss me and I move away. To grab my stuff and get away from here. But where do I go? To work? To a hotel. No to Rainers.

  I knock on the door.

   "Hey Rainer. You- it's-"

   "Shut up Paige." He kisses me. I push him fully inside the door. He leads us up to the room.

It's him. It's always been him
