we walked along the dusty track, side by side, and somehow his hand found its way around mine, and his warmth revived me from the chilly autumn air suffocating us. the sky at this time of the day was merely an arrangement of pink and orange intermixing lines, with faint stars speckled among the clouds in neat little constellations like fairy lights strung on a christmas tree. trees stretched up towards the evening sky, silhouetted black by the sunset and casting disheveled shadows that played in the grassy banks ahead of us. i watched a shadow cocoon his face from the orange light as we ducked beneath the trees.
we walked until we found a tree with a great thick trunk coated in moss, and gnarly roots that hugged themselves and twisted around in the fallen leaves and sunk into the ground, and long broad branches that stretched outwards further than they stretched upwards, with dozens of skinny limbs protruding from each, and each limb home to a hundred leaves, with each leaf housing its own shade of auburn, some deep and angry, some faded and withered in the shade, and spread amongst the browns and reds was a scattering of bright oranges gleaming under the sunset, and together the leaves formed a warm and thriving mass of colours in the cold october evening.
but what was most impressive was the sheer height of the creature itself, stretching higher and higher with rows and rows of arms forking from its body, and the highest ones were the thinnest and smallest but they watched down on us two tiny intruders at its feet with wariness and sincerity, and became the guardians of the forest.
